I think the 32 pounder with grape was the 18th century equivalent of a CIWS, which does about the same thing. Just sounds a bit different.
They are both pretty expensive, and not exactly portable (aye, there's the rub).

Okay after 31 books set in the napoleonic wars (Aubrey/maturin, hornblower), I admit my thoughts are a bit colored. That said, it seems to me that with all these modern weapons, none seem to be quite as effective or awe inspiring a couple century throwback to a naval 32 pounder cannon loaded with grape. One shot could clear the decks of more than fifty men. The psychological effect is even greater.

The bad guys did not take the defended vessel. Fire discipline could have been better, but the on board security team earned their pay. PS this was not US flag vessel.

A good 50cal sniper rifle and/or a 50 cal machine gun would really compliment the M16s or AR15s they were using. A few hits from a 50 on the hull, engine or 'soft targets' on board, would have turned that launch into tooth picks and or neutrallized it. |

Small weapons like that can be deadly, in the hands of correctly trained individuals.
Warning shots were not what I think are a good idea, in my opinion.
What if the pirates decided to shot back with RPG's?
I say, hit the who ever is on the topsides. Then the engine. If you are going to waste
ammo, make it count. Don't film it. Let the Sharks have a good meal. |

Agree...
Though I do admit the assault rifles did the job in that case, are VERY portable and not all that expensive. I'm guessing cost is an important factor and heavier weapons with more ammunition are going to get pricey. |

Dealing with pirates on their small fast maneuver boats, a big bulky machine guns may not be a better choice for the guards though. When you throw some of those grenades down, unless those pirates are dumb enough to hang around, I think they'd just turn tails and heading other direction. |

The M203 would be a good deterrent. One BIG splash near one of those boats might change their plans. Not sure what the chances of actually hitting one would be though.
I'd be more in favor of a machine gun of some type. While it would be nice, you don't have to blow up the boat, just hit a few of the crew, and the more rounds you can put out there the better your chances are. |

Good going but yes, it would have been nice if they also had something with a bit more BOOM to it. Perhaps something that could be moved from mount to mount depending where the target is. All that is needed is one good hit on the boat. A wonderful thought....sitting on a disabled small open boat miles from shore, no hope of rescue. |

The boats are probably foamed and cannot be sunk. Even if they're not, a couple dozen 1/4" holes won't make much difference in that short a time (unless of course you put them in the engine or the crew). It appears the security crew DID hit whoever was steering though.
Personally I think security was under-gunned.

That should educate the pirates a little. I really was hoping the security guys had a Barret 50 on board, that would have really allowed them to reach out and touch someone.
I couldn't even see the second skiff. |
