Spent 3 days at Montauk Yacht Club, then came across to Block in beautiful weather. Just got donuts from Paynes, clamming later. Caught some squid last night.

The fuel at Capri is ALWAYS way over priced. Should be avoided at all costs! I like going there but will never buy their fuel.

Wow. But we know how you feel. We came across the Gulf Stream (8 or 9 hours), in the St. Lucie inlet (shallow, and bumped once), up the river to the bridge right before the marina, and the railroad bridge crews decided to close the bridge so no one could pass. We all waited quite a while until some man in a pick up truck slllllooooooowwwwwwwllllllyyyyy moved across the bridge waving at all of us waiting for the opening.
We also had the lockmaster at the Mayaka lock declare the lock broken, and that we should tie up for the night somewhere. So I called the main Army Corp of Eng. office for the region and asked WTF in pleasant terms. Son of a gun the lock worked when we arrived. I'm thinking you should have made some calls as well particularly if there were no notices to mariners.

If you know it won't open, then the trip around Manhattan does not take much longer than going thru the Harlem River - the extra time was because we went all the way up, then had to backtrack.

If you are coming down the Hudson, you have to pass it anyway, so it won't make much difference. If you're coming from the Sound to the Hudson, you can get screwed.

It doesn't happen too often, but when it does, it's a PITA! From now on, I'm going to call the NYPD on the VHF when I get to Hell Gate to see if it's open.
Prospective Posted - Jul 18 2012 : 08:31:58
Wow, does the bridge closing to water traffic happen very often? I'll be coming south on the Hudson in a few weeks and had hoped to use the Harlem River to shorten the trip into LI sound. That extra 1.5hrs could really mess with plans.

That sucks but I figured that's what happened. At least you had a great trip, My last return trip wasn't fun either I'll tell you about it in person sometime.
BenDiss Posted - Jul 17 2012 : 22:42:34
That's happening too often. We ought to have a way to know before we get all the way up there. After it happened to us going the other way, we thought to call Circle Line and make sure their tour was running. That might be an good indicator, but a lousy way to check.
HOGAN Posted - Jul 17 2012 : 21:12:19
Got all the way up to Spuyten Duyvil and radioed the bridge for an opening. The response was the bridge was closed to water traffic indefinitely. What a PITA! Turned around and had to go around Manhattan during rush hour ferry traffic - NOT FUN.

Added another 1 1/2 hours to the trip... Lousy ending to fantastic trip.

So today I got a text message it was supposed to be a picture of Hogan in the Harlem River I really couldn't make it out but the question is did you have a problem it would seem you were back tracking and going the wrong way? Was there a problem at one of the bridges or something? or was it yet another Trojan with a tan top. The person who spotted you owns the other so I know it wasn't him.

Look real close!

It's five o'clock somewhere, and that "somewhere" is HERE!!! Time for our last mudslides of the vacation.
Audrey II Posted - Jul 16 2012 : 08:25:05
I have never been to Pilots Points I may have to check it out I keep hearing good things about it.
HOGAN Posted - Jul 16 2012 : 08:11:40
Yesterday was the first cloudy day in almost 2 weeks. We got some sprinkles during the day, then some heavy rain at night. Nice light show, too! The skies are perfectly clear this morning, and it's supposed to get back into the 90's.

Deciding whether to stay at Pilot's Point another day, or head to Branford for the night. Either way, tomorrow we head home....

Happy Birthday to Gina!!

Wish Gina a Happy Birthday! How much longer is your trip? The weather here was pretty crappy today as well.
HOGAN Posted - Jul 15 2012 : 16:32:29
Two nice days at Saybrook Point Marina, cast off this morning and came all the way over to Pilot's Point (10 miles). Cloudy and humid today, we're getting some rain now, lots of thunder.

This is a really nice marina, there is a food cart that sells burgers for $2/each! We're having dinner at "Boom" tonight for Gina's birthday!
Audrey II Posted - Jul 13 2012 : 18:35:56
sounds like a nice trip it's great that the kids are able to hop in and out of the vacation like that!

I don't want to rush the season but I can't wait for my trip in August.

No sign of BOB...

Dave, my son drove to Montauk in his car, then came to Block with us. He then took the ferry back to Montauk with Tim and Tim's friend.

Tim drove out today and just got to Saybrook.

Hank, so far, it is really nice.

Another nice ride from Block to Saybrook today.

I told Bob he could follow me in a few weeks if he wants. He's still going on about his lawn mower generator that's too heavy to bring to his boat:) I don't think his is a bad guy just misunderstood:)

"Our two sons left to go home today, Tim will be back on Friday with his girlfriend."

How are they traveling? I going away for 12 nights next month and I'm renting a car in Essex just to drop off my daughter at her friends house in CT because she has someplace to go before we will be getting home. The things we do for our kids:)

Let me know what you think of Saybrook Marina. I am looking for a stop over on my way back from Block and have previously stayed at Essex. It may not be far enough along the way so any other recommendations would also be helpful. BTW- Tired of Port Jeff

Glad it's all working. We are taking a vacation from Freedom after having been aboard since last October! She's up getting bottom paint and some maintenance while we screw off at Ft. Myers Beach.
Continued Success!

Clamming was great, squid were not biting like they used to, entire schools would swim by without a bite.

Dinners at Manisses and Harbor View were excellent. Sushi at The Oar was outstanding! Lunch at Poor Person's Pub was great - the burgers were HUGE!
