Received the bad news that my 2000 31 PC needs a replacement gimble ring, which according to my mechanic is extremely costly from both a material and a repair time perspective. Any feedback, and approx cost would be appreciated.

he said 99% of the time the drive has struck something. Pulling the engine depends on the amount of collateral damage. $2800 sounded high to him for not pulling the engine, but again thats without seeing it. Is this a dealer giving the quote? he thought there might be some issues there. If you did strike something it sould be covered under you insurance
sorry i doubt this has been any help.

thanks for the input, at this point I'm stuck...

did have a problem with something along those lines, did exactly as you plan to in attempt to keep things "off the floor" and out of water...

after a heavy rain or wash down I'll get water in the side compartments of the engine room. the area where the water heater, and batteries sit, more on that side then the holding tank side. probably because of the direction rain usually its my boat. Formula is awhere of this, thats why there is the metal plate over the b-charger. it has caused my power trim motor mounting bracket to rust. ( i've ordered a new one and will place it up on a piece of poly board.)I just wondered if you had had a similar problem

I'll relay what he says to you. He only works on Mercury and mercruiser products. Formula has approached him about handling there warranty work in my area. I wouldn't take my boat back to my dealer for anything.
I'm curious...do your side vents leak water into your engine room like mine does?

Nothing that I've noticed

never really get a straight answer, I was told that could have been stress placed in shifting at low idle from forward to reverse(although I take great care to prevent this). First one occurred after running for 40 minutes, went to dock, kaput. Second one, was running heavy and came out of shallow canal, trimmed outdrives up, churned up some mud(had no choice), made it through, but had no port side power.

David- what caused your coupler problems. mine was a mis-alignment of the starboard engine ,no doubt from the factory. should have been picked up by my dealer.

to get the engine out on the 31 you have to first remove the risers, slid the engine foward, then lift
$950 in labor
$625 in parts

According to my mechanic, Mercruiser design flaw and that the new replacements are much better. Other side(port)seems fine, no movement. Under 600 hours on the boat.

The bravo II drive on my 1990 26PC had a leak that let seawater enter. it was a small drip at the top of the gimbel housing that caused the gimbel bearing to rust. My mechanic said this was not uncommon to the Bravo II. could this have caused the problem with your gimbel housing? I sold the 26pc 5 yrs ago and no longer have the service records to know what work was preformed. The engine was pulled the following year when the oil pan sprung a leak. It was replaced along with the timing belt cover, both had rusted, possibly because of the leak. I'll be in my mechanics shop this weekend (4/26/08) to paint my drives for the season I'll run your problem by him.

I needed a new transom assembly. Mine came from the disentegration of the retaining ring on the top of the drive inside the bellows.Metal broke off and chewed up both of the bellows mating surfaces. That was a $4000 repair bill and required the removal of the engine. I never did find out why that ring broke. My mechanic stated he had only seen that once. It could have been casued by running the drive in trailer position (which i never did)

getting a quote of $2800 if they "don't have to pull the engine"?
GSENT Posted - Apr 17 2008 : 17:38:51
parts should include bellows, shift cable, gimble bearing, etc/ all the necessary parts that should be replaced.
GSENT Posted - Apr 17 2008 : 17:37:59
900.00 in parts, about 1000.00 in labor Engine must come out to remove transom assembly.
