Ok guys, putting a feeler out there!
Our company is in the process of getting people lined up to run some boats for the response/cleanup. The bulk of the work will be driving small work boats w/ outboards to the affected areas from the dock. Sometimes you will wait on site, other times you will be making constant round trips.
You will need to like being on a boat....... a lot! LOL!
You will need to know boats, and I mean how to put the plug in, how to stop a boat without knocking everyone over by hitting the dock, general knowledge of a GPS or Radar, know how to actually talk on a VHF radio and not say "mais what you want me der far - mais' I just left dat spot", and so on.... I bring this up because someone forgot to mention that to the people that have been running some boats out there.
The pay will be $25-$30/hr, working long days, average has been sun up till 18:00 hrs. Lodging will be provided and I am still working out details for per diem, so I will announce that when I get it. I will conduct a Hazwoper course at my office in Lafayette, and we need you to have a TWIC card. I know the TWIC is a big pain for people, but I don't make the rules, I just try to get things done. I am asking for a waiver for the TWIC, but can't promise that.

My only connection with tomatoe juice is to drink it with a little vodka mixed in.

Posted - Jun 02 2010 : 21:06:39 Yes, there are two companies, both hiring locals first, as per BP. Might be good PR to hire locals first. If they hire out of La. first, the unemployeed fishermen will really go for their throats.
I was just passing this on. I didn't know that they were hiring locals first. I just wanted my boater friends who needed a job to have one, on boats. |

Posted - Jun 02 2010 : 15:18:05 Got a reply back today. They are indeed hiring locals first. Which is exactly as it should be.
I have a feeling, though, that they are going to need a lot more as time goes on. This whole thing just keeps getting uglier and uglier.
Heck, I'd probably go do it as a volunteer just for expenses.

PS: I was born south of Lake Okeechobee so I do not qualify as a yankee.

Posted - Jun 02 2010 : 08:30:46 I agree, unless there are not enough locals. There are alot of shrimpers and other fishermen out of work down there, give them the work!

Posted - May 28 2010 : 17:08:55 I may be interested in doing this for a while. I have both a 50 ton Master and a current TWIC. In addition to my Voyager I currently own a 20' CC fishing boat with single outboard. I have run boats up to 76'
The email address was garbled so if you can send it to me in a PM I will respond directly.
