I was painting some screens under our boathouse on Tuesday when I see a boat pulling a tuber go by very fast and very close to shore; about 20 yards off our dock. A few seconds later I hear a blood-curdling scream and cries for help just south of our property. The boat had hit a submerged rock close to shore, thrown a teenage girl off the bow, and then the prop severed her leg below the knee. By the time I puttered down in our Whaler, the girl was in a state of shock, and other boaters were diving for her severed foot. They found her foot and she was airlifted for Mass General for re-attachment. I donít know yet if it was successful.
Moral of the story; know the waters where you are boating! If it is an unchartered lake, stay as far away from shore as possible. This area was between a small island and the shore where there are lots of submerged rocks. Although there are hazard buoys on the far side of the island, there are none on the shore side, so the hazard is not totally apparent.

Didn't know that was your pond Tim.
Not too far from here.
There have been a lot of accidents and several deaths so far this season - and we're just getting going. Most have been easily preventable.

^ Exactly, the tow rope is usually 75 ft long. It does not usually go 90 degrees to boat, but often 45 degrees

100' ? You are kidding, right? More like 300' from shore minimum

Most all Correct Crafts are ski boats, with open bow seating. Still, they shouldn't be less than 100' from shore. Very sad.

Pulling a tube 20 yards off a dock??? No excuse... I hope they throw the book at the driver.

It says "on the bow" but they do make bowriders. Open bow or closed bow boat?

Tragic, sounds like the three ejected were bow rideing and at a high rate of speed.

Tim, wow that is a harrowing story. The NE is in a real dry spell and our lake is at an all time low for this time of year. There are hazards that have not been seen in years. I heed your advice. John
