I took this short clip of sailing with Rusty. We're about 1,500 miles offshore in the NA on our way to Cherbourg.

Where does the pooch poop when you are 1500 miles out?

He used a piece of astroturf with a line attached to it. Once he's done you deposit the whole thing overboard and let it drag for a while to clean it up. With some enthusiastic encouragement it didn't take him long to figure out where to go...

How long did the voyage take you?

What ave speed did you make?

You got some big cahones and great sailing skills to do that trip. Congrats.

1500 miles out?...I honestly think I'd have been joining the "pooch" on the board.

The delivery was from NY City to Cherbourg, France (on the English Channel). Speed was anywhere from 4 to 8 knots with a day or two of doldrums. It took a hair over 30 days, including a stopover at Block Island for last minute preparations. There were 3 crew but only one on watch at any given time. And the dog, of course :)

RN... the bigger the boat, the smallest cahones you need... :-) although that boat is the clip doens't look very big :-)

cahones are the guys racing across the pond in smaller boat, either the mini transat (solo) or the AG2R transat in 30' Beneteaus... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Brp3Zi3R1i4&feature=related
two skippers per boat so they can go flat out 100% of the time across. it's a great race... and being a one design race, the results can be very close, once under 1 minute between 1st and 2nd after 4000 miles!

yeah, Silvain, dont' be selfish, tell us more... any other clips, picture?

My marina in NY Harbor is the main jumping off point for many that come and go across the Atlantic.

It's almost a weekly event to see a sailboat come in (leave) from across the pond at my dock.

Some interesting stories and some great people we've met.

Heading accross the pond in a 30-80'er to me is equal to jumping out of a plane with some canvas and a rip cord attached to your back. It must be quite a trip when mother nature decides to play with you.

The boat was a Stevens Custom 40. A 40 foot center cockpit, cutter rigged, and a very seaworthy boat. Most of the ports leaked like a sieve though. I'm glad my stuff was in a waterproof bag.

There's a lot of water out there and it's all the same. After a while it gets monotonous except for the occasional apparition of sea life. There were some really nice moments like those and we usually shouted out what was out there so the others could come up and share the experience if they wanted to.

And here was the route. Each red dot represents a day - more or less.

Wondered why you went straight across, (which put you into the Atlantic High apparently) rather than the Bermuda, Azores, France route that most of us take? Thanks for sharing! Dogs are fun on trans Atlantic trips--good watch companions. With 3 on board, that gives you better rest than 2!

I dunno Rusty didn't look too happy. How did he like the poodles greeting him on arrival?
