Thnx Thud & Walter. I sent the pics to the designer. He liked what I did. He also told me these are used all over the world for temporary shelters. He even has pics of one in New Guinea covered in palm fronds so the possibilities are endless. Apparently the clear shrink wrap has the same uv protection as the white or blue stuff Thud. Life expectancy is 3-4 yrs. The best covering, according to the designer is canvas and painted. You can expect 10+ yrs life out of that.

There's pics of the shed here...

http://s237.photobucket.com/albums/ff166/KnottyBuoyz/KBIII/

and here...

http://s237.photobucket.com/albums/ff166/KnottyBuoyz/2010/

Don't know how I got them split up like that, doh!

I'm going to get a remote controlled web cam for the shed. Once the boat starts getting built you'll be able to log onto the camera through a web page and pan, tilt and zoom it around. How's that Walter? Next best thing to being there eh?

Yours Aye!

Thnx Thud. If you want or need the full size pics I can send them to you.

The boat is still in kit form. Just unwrapped it today.

It's still going to take some doing to get this space turned into a boat shop. I put up a shelf today to get some of the stuff up out of the way that I keep tripping over.

One teeny tiny step towards getting this thing put together. Standby....

Rick,

Is the opening near the ground and to the right of the doors, where the food tray gets delivered?

Hope you have great success with the build and I look forward to following your progress.

I'm following this intently.
In AK, I spread the Clear 6 mill over my "Boat Tent Structure" and then covered that with the ubiquitous Blue Tarp.
I held the edges down with jugs half filled with water.
That worked great. The 6mil visqueen was the Water proof part, and the Blue Tarp kept the winds from tearing up the Visqueen. The Snow slid right off the Blue Tarp.
The Visqueen was sort of a throw-away because it died an ugly death as soon as it was taken down. After a winter it was easily cracked and broken if moved. Couldn't be saved.

Ricks set up is more permanent. Since it WONT be dismantled every spring, it should last two or more years. The Sun wont kill that Blue tarp like it does the Visqueen. I'd bet there is some preventative Paint to keep it up for years.

I wonder why more people don't do this. Especially down where I live. I am seriously thinking of making a version of that, down behind my Barn as a "mother in law" cabin and moving down there to Hermit.

In these photos you see a "Dang near Hurricane proof Barn" that is losing its Roof. Built in the early 60's, it's Tin is rotted and the Purlins have rotted from too much water. The fasteners are Rusted. The whole Roof has to be replaced.

Ricks structure makes me think I can tear down 60 Feet or so of that Barn and put up a Structure like Ricks, with a Round top instead of the tall peak.

I think "Repairing" my Barn would cost more than a "Hermit" shed like Ricks.
This and this:

60' of shed would run you near $5K Thud. Definitely cheaper than replacing a structural shed like yours. I've yet to get the plumbing run for the head or the cable run for the satellite TV. The Admiral and I are still negotiating about meal service and conjugal visits Brian! ;-) We've got wireless internet so that's covered. Managed to get some artificial lighting up this weekend.

Sorry to say I don't have any progress of worth to report other than I don't have to hang any Xmas lights on the shed. It glows in the dark in this nice cool blue color!

The only other thing of note is we received the mortgage discharge papers this week. It's all ours now and there'll be more $$$ in the boat building kitty!

Carry on......

I haven't had anything to post in awhile so here goes. Remember, I have no idea what I'm doing. I just make it up as I go along. I just laid it up as it felt good in my hand. I didn't bother to count the wraps as they went on. It's 3/16 diamond braid cotton cord. It looks like it'll take about 120 feet to do the whole wheel.

Next task will be to learn to tie a Turks Head knot to cover the gaps.

I'm thinking I'll have to build a small extension to the fwd end of the shed so I can get around the boat. Otherwise I'll have to go up and over and down all the time. That's not necessarily a bad thing as I'll definitely get more exercise that way.

T-Minus 2 days and counting till Spring! Warm weather has lifted my spirits and I'm starting to get stuff organized. Last night I fired up the IROC in preparation to get it out of the way. Just need the ground to dry up a bit so I can shift the boat and car around.

Hey Rick,

Soon it will be two of us with builds underway, I m finishing the design and plans for a 25' gaff rigged classic sloop... Construction will start early June, I ll start a new thread then! It will be strip planked, clear awlgrip over a glass layer on the hull to show the wood, wooden spars, but built on a foam cored glass frame.
