I got 'nuff chatter goin' on in the neighborhood Thud. One fella came over and said he was told I was building an airplane in the shed! ;-) Things will get interesting when I bring out the cabin roof, 8' x 16' 5" and stick that up on the side of the shed! ;-)

Here's one half of the cabin roof. I used my electric hoist to lift it. Worked well and kinda essential when you're working alone.

Rick a whole bunch of scrap wood is pretty handy when your by yourself too.
You can make all kinds of Brackets, lift's and skids and other stuff.
It sure looks like a comfortable ride when you do get into it.
I'm also glad to see it coming along so well.

Thnx. Thud. At this point watchin' epoxy cure is about as much fun as watchin' paint dry! ;-) Part of me wants to get on with doing the fun stuff like fitting out the boat but I know I have to pay my dues and do all this other stuff first. It won't technically be a "boat" till the fall when I flip it over.

We're pretty lucky we don't get much really bad weather in this part of the world. My heart goes out to those down south recovering from the weather that's befallen them this week. We felt the tail end of the storms that caused so much devastation in the States. Anyhow it was blowing 60-70 MPH here yesterday and that's highly unusual for us. The plans I bought for the bow shed said 70 mph was the max for the design. I built it to plans and doubled the size of the stakes that went into the ground. Now I think that was a good idea. When I got home last night the shed was still standing but taking a pretty good beating from the 40+ MPH winds. It moved quite a bit and had blown the bottom of one of the big doors in. I backed the doors up with a 2x8 and tied the shed to my boat and my garden shed. If it takes flight now I'll have to go to Oz to get my lawnmower! ;-)

BZ to Stimson Marine for a great shed design.

I know it doesn't look like much but I'm making a lil' headway now.

Moved the two sides of the cabin top outside.

They'll stay here till next summer I'm guessing. They'll be wrapped up neatly in the tarp to keep them dry and safe.

Moved onto the bulwarks. These are pretty simple joins so I did both sides at once. First time I've done that. We'll see how they turn out.

When the bulwarks are done I'll start on the bottom and side panels. That'll take a bit of forethought to juggling the parts once they're assembled.

That's it for now. Shower then off to the Flea Market to see what treasures I can find. ;-)

Stringers are done and bottom panels are going on the table next to be taped and glued.

PS. I did bleed on it today. Had a lil' run in with a runaway tape measure! Cut right to the bone and only stopped when it hit my nail. Good thing for paper towel and hockey tape!

I had to lay out the entire bottom panel so I could scribe the curve of the chine on the extension panel. I'm stretching the boat 39-1/8". The extension panels is the slightly lighter colored one half way down.

The whole bottom panel is 31'10" long. My shed is 32'! ;-( Looks like I'll be climbing up and over! Should be good though, I'll drop a few lbs in the process.

Today's session in the boat shed was a bit of a marathon. I had to finish up the bottom panel that was on the table. First was to clean out the kerfs that were glassed over when I did the seams.

A sharp chisel made quick work of that. If you catch the epoxy while it's still green the chisel goes through it like a knife through butter. Much better than another session with the grinder if you ask me.

I tried really hard to pass up this sale.

I'm a weak man and just had to get myself a biscuit joiner. I know a lot of guys luv them and lot hate them. Me? I need all the help I can get so I figured for $69.99 it was worth the small gamble.

I left the bottom panel in two parts. Joining them now would have made it totally unwieldy to handle. I'll join the two sections on the strongback. Once the first panel was tucked away it was onto the second. I know it's not very exciting but I'll be at this for another week or so.

Seams all glued and taped. I'll be able to flip this section in the morning and tape the backside.

Using the winch its easy to flip these big panels. I'm really glad I installed the pulleys in the ridge of the shed when I built it.

Thnx for the encouraging words folks. Sometimes I have to sit back and wonder if this is all really happening! ;-) I've been planning it for years but actually starting it sneaks up on you. Anyhow I managed to get the last of the bottom panels done and tucked away and have just sorted out all the side panels to be assembled. One piece was AWOL and I found it hiding behind the 4 large bottom panels I just stacked up. Well a lot of huffin' and puffin' and moanin' and groanin' and I liberated the mislabeled miscreant. I'm a little luckier with the side panels, the extension I have to put in just happens to line up with an existing seam. ;-) I know these pics aren't exciting but it's what I'm doing at the moment.

I found this one on Lori's camera. I don't usually like having my picture taken, I've ruined a few camera's with my ugly mug in the past so this is one of the rare glimpses of yours truly you'll see.

Thanks for looking in and all your encouraging words are warmly appreciated.

So I'm assuming that as you assemble the larger pieces, you'll need to start fabbing up the craddle or something to support the structure? Do the insturctions give you details on that too? Or are you left on your own to figure that out?

Oh no, it's all there, included in the kit. It's called a "Strongback" and the hull is put together on it upside down. It'll look something like this....

I'll start putting the strongback together as soon as the last long panel is done. A couple of weeks from now maybe.

I had to laugh at your futuer with that Bisquik joiner. I did my whole Kitchen/Bath/bedroom cabinets with one of those and a couple bags of Biscuits.
Boy did i learn a lot about "Centering" and "which directions to join from" and some Etc.
A couple times I had to make a nice thin-Kerf cut, destroying a joint, to make a new joint in the same place with better, more attentive, Bisquitrey!
Nothing better for making nice joints though.
I eventually used lots of Biscuits, but I never had to bend any of my work. You may discover a place where too many Bisquits made Gravy out of your Steak.

You may want to put some stained glass in that window up there...whew, the Scarecrow you got looks like a Highly paid Craftsman!

That pretty much goes without sayin' Willie. There's been some very colorful metaphors used on this project so far. Mostly during the construction of the shed!

I knew I was going to run into this lil' logistical problem eventually.

The side panels with the extension are 32' 3" long. The shed is only 32'!

The only solution I could come up with is putting a small extension on the front of the shed. I still have to allow passage from the adjoining house to the side yard. When I built the barn doors I knew I'd probably do something like this.....

I know it doesn't look pretty but I don't care as long as it keeps the rain out. I'll hang a screen door on it later. That's about it for today, it's over 90 degs in the shed. Have to put some work into more ventilation.

I thought I'd be smart this week and tried to glue and tape some seams both sides at once. Result was a disaster.

This is the bottom side. I had gooped a lot of epoxy on the tape but I don't think I had 'nuff weight on top to compress the panel so it'd squeeze the bubbles out. I also tried to do 4 joints like this at once! Doh! Anyhow I got to spend some quality time with my power planer, grinder and belt sander! *scratch scratch*

So after re-taping and gluing all 4 joints I got near perfect joints. These are simple butt joints but they're incredibly strong. All the ole' timers tell me you have to scarf those joints. *sigh* I cut a rebate (1'64") into the sheets where they'll be jointed so the fiberglass can lay down in there. When finished the joint is near perfectly smooth across it and will require only a light sanding to prep it for a secondary bond.

Live and learn. Slow and steady will win this race. ;-)

Feel free to carry doing whatever it was you were doing! ;-)

Speaking of treasures, if you care to post a wish list of stuff you're looking for I for one, and I'm sure others, would be happy to keep an eye out and an ear open for stuff for you.

Great, now take it to NBR.

Not too much Flutters. About $20 in materials and some scratching!

Thanks Bill I appreciate it. The list is still pretty long. Some stuff we won't need for another yer yet. Most of the lil' doodads & fittings etc. I've picked up over the last 4 yrs or so. I'll put some thought into that and see what I can come up with. I do have a list of what I've bought so far....

Anything on that list with a price filled in I have already.

It was getting a little warm in the shed so I had to bodge some ventilation in peak. $15 at Lowes!

And if that's not 'nuff to keep me cool & dry this lil' puppy will blow a hurricane through the shed!

Back to the grinder tonight, Oh Joy!

Looking at those lists I see a lot of stuff that can be found at the nautical consignment shops. I would start looking early because as you know that stuff comes and goes at those places.

I also have access to an OEM/wholesale account with a large marine electronics, electrical, safety and general marine gear distributor. So just let me know if there is anything you'd like me to get you a price on.
