Either your building a boat one wooden componant at a time from the inside out and your showing us the progress you've made so far or your revealing or should I say teasing us with what appears to be details from a very beautiful finished boat that you probably have just purchased and as the pictures show there's lots of wood on it. I might guess than that wood is very important to you hence the name... Woodsong.

It's 2:25. AM or PM unknown as it is a chronometer wannabe with the requisite accompanying barometer. It'll do 60 MPH or 6000 RPM's; I can't tell from the gauge exactly what it is. It doesn't match the wannabe chronometer with the requisite accompanying barometer. The speakers need new grilles. The cabinet doors have locks in different positions to confuse the farque out of you when you drink. The door finishes do not match which leads me to believe this is a project of some sort.

If it did not appear to have a lower helm station mounted to the wainscot in your dining room, I'd say it was an older Grand Banks or the like trawler.

ok, ok....time to let the cat out of the bag. :) I have thus far held off in saying anything thus far...mostly b/c I have had quite a few "close calls" since we sold our silverton this past winter. We really had 2 types of boats we were interested in when we sold this winter. Option A) 45-50' semi-liveaboard to take between TN River and FL, etc. Option B) something about the same size as our 38 silverton but diesel powered, extremely fuel efficient, nice lines, etc. Several RO's graciously looked at a few boats for me that were near them but those boats were not to be. I flew to several paces around the SE- Kentucky, FL, etc. and had a couple of boats under contract that were out of state but upon going to view them it became obvious the brokers had not disclosed the boat's actual condition.
It seems in this process we have come full circle and the deal was right in front of us the entire time. Frankly, after the last potential boat fell through, I pretty well decided we would just remain boatless this year and hit it again this winter. However, plans have a way of working out despite what you think may happen and wow am I glad about that!
Basically, the big boat plans became very frustrating. Nothing to be had in the condition we wanted at the price that seemed right. And just as we were about to just say heck with it, we found our boat. She is not the big boat we had been looking for but I now very, very glad that none of those boats worked out and this little boat is really just perfect for us.

So what is it?? :)

1983 MMC/Monk 36 Trawler. MMC stands for "Miricle Marine Corp" which is a Taiwanese company that is basically the literally exact same layout/finish at the Monk 36 and it is an Ed Monk designed hull. The funny thing...she has been on the same dock my silverton had been on just 2 slips down the entire time! Small world, eh? I happened to talk to the seller last week and basically he told me he had to sell his trawler asap. After going through the boat with him and looking her over, he made us an offer I simply could not pass up...a phenomenal deal. She needs a few things but overall, is by far in the best shape I have seen for her vintage. Being kept under covered slip for the last 11 years on Lake Lanier and very light use I guess will lend itself to a sound boat. Her topsides need to be painted, add electronics, a soft spot on her bridge to address, and a few other things. Even factoring that in, she is a great deal and a once in a lifetime deal to say the least. We are tremendously excited. We are going to LOVE her 2 to 2.5 GPH fuel burn via her single 135hp Perkins. She also has an 8KW northern lights generator with low hours on both. I will be adding a thruster at some point I imagine as well. Reality is as well, once we get her refit this winter, she will be a fun platform for Lake Lanier or to bring to the TN River and seasonally cruise around here and there. If we cruise for a few weeks, leave somewhere, come back, cruise more, etc. the reality is that she will be a very economical vessel to do that in as well.

So yes, she needs a little bit of work but she is really fully functional right now as-is and she is in better shape than most other boats near her vintage by a longshot. Engine seems to run strong, everything powers right up, 2 heads, 2 staterooms, a super cozy salon, nice flybridge area, wide sidedecks, davit system in place off the platform and I'll probably work a deal on his 9.5 RIB. We'll fix the soft spot on the bridge and put down synthetic teak up there, paint the topsides, do the electronics, new canvas/eisenglass, clean her up, etc. The good thing is that the interior, while needing a little dusting/clutter control, is actually spotless. None of the typical water damage, no leaks, teak/holly sole literally throughout entire boat, 2 brand new HVAC units, newer fridge, new transmission seals, new cutlass bearings, dripless shaft seal, new batteries and charger, and best of all- 2 GPH! :) I also LOVE all her interior teak and tons more storage than my silverton ever, ever had. The layout fits an amazing amount of space for being just a 36. So, this Thursday we are closing on our new little trawler (only have to confirm engine compression but even if we have to get a new engine installed it's still a great deal so doing it just to check status in case I need to address it) and are looking forward to making her our cozy little home on the water, assuming I can figure out how to dock with a single screw! We will keep her on Lanier for a while since she is already there and then see what happens.

Pictures:

And a video I shot this weekend of her interior:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uqRNofECsWo

And exterior:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZ8wB21MdAs

You'll notice the fiberglass below the flybridge is discolored- this is due to having been sanded down by the previous owner in preparation to paint.

So closing Thursday, have a business deal closing Friday morning, then on the boat all weekend getting her scrubbed down and hanging out with our dock friends already on the dock!

It's funny how things work out. We really wanted the bigger boat but after an afternoon spent on this little 36 single screw trawler, I see that we have found our perfect little cozy boat in a package I had not been looking for but I am now extremely, extremely glad the other deals never came together. The funny thing is that the day after we signed the contract on the 36, the broker with a 47 Chris Craft Commander called me back to tell me his seller would do the deal on the price I submitted the week before (we had been $5k apart). As beautiful as that boat looked, I was extremely happy to tell him I already had my new boat lined up. Sellers- point there is that if you have a cash buyer in hand ready to fly over and do the deal, don't be silly- SIGN IT UP before something else comes along. In my instance, I am glad they debated it as it let us find a better deal on this happy little trawler.

Nice.

I think you'll find once you get used to a small single screw boat like that you won't be in a hurry to get a bow thruster. Although it my help at resale.

Are you going to be keeping it under cover? If not, keep a eye out for those leaks.

Thanks all- we're pretty excited. This boat is much more our speed I think and my wife loves it and loves that i've given her the green light to decorate to her heart's content without a budget (within reason!) so she's planning all kinds of teak chairs, etc.

it will be very interesting to see how a single screw diesel handles...will be a true first for me. I don't think it will be an issue, at least not where she currently is. Fairway is wide and dock not overly exposed and we will continue to park her bow in first (unlike our silverton which was always stern in).

Bill- lol on the pipe. Seller installed the 7k btu in the aft stateroom below in the first hanging locker. He simply installed a 6" PVC pipe for the "duct work" for the short 2' run. It works surprisingly well. I am either going to box it in with T&G to match walls and hide the pipe and paint the vent or get some real duct work and put a vent there and further down the run of the hanging lockers which is what I will probably do. It blasts out that air like crazy though and that one vent cools that room surprisingly well. He just never got around to covering the pipe. :) For just making it out of PVC though I must give him an A+ for making it actually look somewhat "nautical."

She'll be kept in the same slip under roof. If I ever relocate her to an uncovered slip she will get full rebedding of her windows, etc. prior to then- I would NOT be happy camper if the interior started to get water damage.

You're not going to learn to handler her doing that. :-)

Learning to handle a single screw boat properly raises you're over all boat handling skills exponentially.

Nice boat. Welcome to the 8 knot, single screw world. No big deal on learning to handle the boat, just get out and practice. Remember to point the bow, swing the stern. With a single screw you should always have your "out" planned before you commit to any close quarters maneuver. You also need to learn when to anchor out and tender in. I hope somebody in the crew likes to do varnish work.

George, I noticed all the outside railings have canvas covers. that will help cut down on the bright-work hours spent. If the interior isn't varnished, I'd just do an annual oiling with something such as Liquid Gold.

I'd pick oil over varnish any day of the year! Much less time consuming.
