I cannot throw them away!!! Today I tried to eliminate at least 1 of 3 large boxes of old boating mags. I opened it up and went through about 10 mags including Boating,MotorBoating, GoBoating,Boatinglife, Boating world, Saltwater Sportsman,Yachting, you get the picture... In everyone of them I saw something that made me want to keep the mag. Does anyone else have these problems? Am I a hoarder or just a boater who wants to keep them in case I ever want to do: "Three quick projects you can do this weekend", Read again the "9 tips that will prolong your boats engine life", or review "The 5 best express cruisers" from 2006 or hit that secret boating locale that promises "2 vacations one destination" mentioned on the cover. Am I sick or is this just part of the boating bug?

I feel your pain.

3 possible solutions:

(1) Stack the most recent 12 issues of each mag. in a pile. When a new issue comes in put it on top and pull out and throw out the issue on the bottom of the pile.

(2) Get a file folder and label each slot, say, maintenance tips, cleaning tips, cruising ground info, etc. Then cut out the articles you want to keep and throw the rest of the mag away.

(3)) Put the mags in a box, seal it and date it. If after a year you have not opened the box throw it out.

Or you could do what I do and just change the date on the box every year. :-)

The two most common elements on Earth are oxygen and stupidity.

Great, now take it to NBR.

I have absolutely no problem getting rid of them. If there as an article I like, I scan it and file it away on the computer. The boating rags now are pretty much junk anyway, for example

"Three quick projects you can do this weekend", - I can come up with that on my own

"9 tips that will prolong your boats engine life", - These can be found on the forums I frequent

"The 5 best express cruisers" from 2006 - This really should read "The 5 manufacturers that spent the most advertising cash with us in 2006

In the world of what seems to be never ending boating forums, anything we need can be found online.

Agree with ITK. The advertising tie-ins to a lot of stories are all too obvious, they laud some company or large marina and here's their ad, on the page after the story. Are you kidding? Try to hide it at least.

I am dumping a lot of mine. It seems like several of them offered teaser rates the last two years that they are now starting to jack up again. Like Boating at $5 was OK, at $12, bye. Soundings, which replaced the defunct Offshore/NE Boating and in my opinion was not as good, bye. Trailer Boating? I don't even know why I ever got that. I will say bye if I can figure out why they are sending it. I don't have time to read them all anyway.

Solution #4 for you - watch a few episodes of Hoarders and see where this kind of thing ends up. You don't have 15 or 20 cats or anything, do you?

Thanks,
Ron

+1 on Soundings. That seems to be one of the better rags...er...mags out there. But they too are way too obvious in their ads=articles. In the April 2011 issue they do a big article on Aspen Power Catamarans. There's an ad for Aspen on the facing page.

Lol good points no cats yet and my relatives are still allowed inside..... As others have said most mags have gone downhill. I get 1 boating mag a month now I think it's "boating" The others I let die. I am on the fence with Soundings the subscription just ended and they sent me an offer of $24.00 for a year which I think I will still take. What I am hoarding are the old ones aka the good ones. It is very interesting to see the then current pricing and all the old gadgets and start up companies in the back. I do miss those... Thank goodness Boatered is online and not a magazine as I would have run out of room in the closet a long time ago....

I've had the same problem, my wife generally sneaks behind me and throws the old ones away. Of course I do the same with her magazines. She had at least 5yrs of Time stuffed into a cabinet that I didn't know about. Life Jason said, you never know when you will need to review the 2006 Best Express Cruisers article or you just can remember that maintenance trick using panty hose!

Before scanners I used to catalog the maintenance tips from the center of MB&S and get rid of them. Like you, I have a ton of stuff. Need to fire up the scanner again.

As to the old ones, see if a veterans home will take them. Just something for them to read.

They're mainly brochures. I did the cut n' save trick a few years ago and then ended lining the litterbox with them. The scanning idea is a good one though.

When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down "happy." They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~John Lennon

I guess Cruising World is my favorite. They don't seem to play the pay-for-press as much (or since the "reviews" are of sailboats, perhaps I just don't pay attention). I just like to look at the pretty pictures :-)

I agree with ITK. Especially the advertiser to "best of" comment. BE's my source for up-to-the-minute info and advice. Only exception is Soundings. Great destination features and great pictures of Hogan's pup! And sometimes you just want to sit in the beach chair with a cold one and a cool magazine.

I trade them with other boaters that have different magazines.

Also, the local Power Squadron we belong to gives out stickers with their website on it.
We put the stickers on the old boating/fishing magazines and put them in doctors offices, hospital waiting rooms... ect.
That way the Power Squadron gets their name and website out to the general public.

I'm down to just Soundings, which I really like. Full disclosure: I do run ads in Soundings from time to time for one or more of my marina clients.

How can you not like Eric Sorenson's articles that appear in Soundings almost every month? He's a fine writer who is very critical of the kind of boat I own (an over-powered, over-equipped floating cottage) but his descriptions of boat construction and design are the best I have seen. I'd put Sorenson up these with Dave Gerr when he wrote for the former Offshore magazine.

The "pay for play" thing is a practice in lots of publishing areas besides boating. It's tough to grind out 30 pages of really original editorial material 12 times a year with a staff of 4-5 people and still make money without taking handouts from advertisers. The publishers would love to dump the printed copies and drive everyone to a website but most readers aren't willing to pay for web access and advertisers will pay only a tiny fraction of the printed ad rate to be on a magazine's website.

So, we're stuck with content such as, "Spring Commissioning: 10 things that every boater should know."

The problem I have with boating magazines is that they're not relevant to the type of boating I do. I own a used boat on which I try to do as much of the necessary work as I possibly can. The boating magazines seem to be all about selling me a brand new high-end boat, which, short of winning a really big lottery, is something I will never do. I want a boating magazine that is a lot like this forum: filled with relevant advice for the DIY used boat owner.

We have 150 to 180 people on board the platform I work on.
When I finish reading my boating, fishing and hunting magazines, I put them in the stalls in the bathrooms.
They disappear real fast. At least they get some good use. No telling how many times they get passed on.

I usually read hardcopy ones on airplane and leave them for someone else to read.

Now I just got and read my copy of maxim ( which I get hardcopy and on iPad).
But this month Jennifer Love Hewitt is in it and i had a hard time throwing her out.

I too have a collection of Soundings,Boating and Hunting and Fishing magazines. I was saving clippings of stuff, then started rotating the stock out by year, now I'm passing them around with my friends.

But,the latest news has me bugged! North American Hunter and Fishermen magazines are being published out of India. Doesn't that seem weird? Our Fishing stories here, go there and come back here... Our clothes and what we drive are from some other country, now what we read...Isn't our hunting and fishing - an American tradition that should be part of something we can hold on too. I don't like it, so I won't buy it!

I had a rolling 10 year collection of magazines. Since I never buy a new boat, I was always able to go back to an old issue and get the boat test on the boats I was looking at. The wife has purged my 'collection' and now I an limited to about 15 magazines at a time.

The older mags were much better IMHO, since I am not in the market for a mega yacht or a $950,000 39' boat. That's all you see in today's magazines.

Plus the older magazines had many more bikini spreads and better looking women than today's mags.

Southern Boating always has the best lookin' babes in skimpy bikinis..........
