I planned on dropping the boat off for storage this Friday, but since the weather was nice I opted to take it out for "just one more run."

Well, I tooled around for a good 45 minutes in 5 mph zones, absolutely no issues, beautiful day. Instead of heading for home, I decided to take it out for one good blast. I figured I was on plane 23mph at 3700rpms for a good 10 minutes, still perfect. Come off plane to go under a bridge, get back up and shortly after the alarm goes off, the temp gauge is pinned. I shut it down immediately and called for a tow, figured I shouldn't even try to limp home.

Uneventful tow, got it to the marina, and evenn started and docked it myself. Oil looks fine, drive oil too.

I am assuming the impeller went, or I sucked up a plastic bag and smoked the pump, but my question is with all the items prior to the thermostat (power steering cooler / fuel cooler), should I be concerned with the impeller blades making their way into the engine block? Its an '02 Merc 350 Magnum, EFI.

Risers/manifolds were done this year.

That engine impeller is mounted on front. Take it apart and look. If missing vanes you will need to find them. You have to fix it now to winterize boat. It's possible it's not the impeller. Could be faulty thermostat stuck as well. Assuming it is fresh water cooled the impeller parts are usually stuck at the end of the first hose coming off the pump, the far end. Usually back flushing gets them out.

If you have an oil cooler, look for the impeller parts there.
