The weather last year coupled with the price of fuel and expected price of fuel this season has resulted in my putting the 1988 Carver 3067 up for sail when I get back up north. Hate to do it but can't justify sitting at Croton on weekends. My dock mate also died last summer.
We will see how it goes

Did he die while boating? Good luck with the sale but if you don't sell if before the season make the best of it. I have entertained the idea of selling mine as well but it would leave a huge hole in my life that I don't know how I would fill it.
Once it's in your blood it's hard to by without.

What does last years weather have to do with this coming summers weather? Sitting in Croton won't cost you anything and is a great way to spend a weekend.

Agreed! but owning a boat and getting it to Croton does come at a price. This is a fact I have been having trouble with lately. Not that my income has chanced in any way but someone had the bright idea a couple of years ago and asked what we spent on our boats that years. I have not gotten over the number it rings in my head over and over, it sounds something like hey idiot what are you thinking spending all that money on a boat. If I had all the money I have spent over the years boating I would be much closer to retirement.
BUT I JUST ENJOY IT SO MUCH I CAN'T GIVE IT UP. I guess I'm an addict!

My boat is my summer home. How much would I have spent on a home instead of the boat? With the boat, I can vacation in other spots, I'm not stuck in one place. Staying at the dock or anchoring in Croton or Bowline is the most relaxing thing I can think of.
It costs money, but the second I walk onto the dock, my blood pressure drops and my problems go away. Boating has kept our family together over the years, we have spent every summer vacation with our kids.
To me, it is definitely worth it.

I agree. Our boat came very close to going away over the winter as the woman we purchased it from last April wanted to buy it back. Financially it is clearly the right move however that boat is what keeps us sane living where we live (it wasn't exactly our first choice when moving back to The US)so after a lot of conversation we declined. We just don't know what we'd do without being able to take off for awhile and relax on the boat. The PO said that she would reach out to us again this fall and if we want to sell she'll buy it otherwise she'll likely go new again.

Life is not a dress rehearsal, you get one shot. The cost of boating (my only vice) is absolutely insane and makes no fiscal sense. But I could argue that being married, owning a business, raising a family makes no fiscal sense as well.
I thought real hard about how much skin I wanted in this game (boating), when the day was done and while the world is crashing (economy), I decided not only to stay in the game, but to get deeper. Crazy, sure, but to live my life the way I want is priceless. All I know is when the day comes I take my final breaths, I will lay in bed knowing I did everything I dreamed of doing, had every toy I wanted, in other words, no regrets or " I wish I did this". I would rather grow old and be poor than die with regrets.

Everyday you wake up in the morning is one day closer that you will not, think hard about that before you pull the trigger to bailout.

Walter all I can say is LOL! I have lived my life be the same rules ever since I lost my Grandfather 6 months after he retired, he never got to enjoy his life. I vowed then to enjoy my life the best I can afford.

Good post! I finally learned the secret to life.
On your death bed, have no regrets, good or bad! If you have some bad ones now now, let them go. You WILL be a better person for what time you have left. It aint a rehersal.

Life is to short you need to enjoy life. I realize that you are better off with nothing in the end because we all know who is looking to take it from you. People with nothing seem to get taken care of better than those who work and play by the rules. Sad but true. So I agree to spend it on your family while you can.
