Hello all. I will be re-installing my 22-21 props back on my 2001 Carver 356, and would like to know if anyone would have a torque for the nut. I have Volvo 7.4 engines turning ZF Marine (Hurth) transmissions, if that matters. I have gone through all my literature and cannot find anything on re-installing props. Also, what are the thoughts of grease/anti-seize on the stainless steel shaft before installing the props?

I have a Bravo III outboard and I always use the Mercruiser 2-4-C grease on the spline anytime I pull mine. I'm not sure how much torque is needed for the nut.

Prop nut torque specs are hard to track down , and technically ...may... depend on multiple factors such as shaft diameter and material used, type of taper and prop, type and size of nut(s) employed. I believe my original Phoenix Yachts manual listed a spec of ~50 ft/lbs for bronze or NIBRAL props on these 1 1/4" tapered Aquamet 22 shafts, gas engines. That's probably at least a decent starting torque for props on shafts 2' or under but confirm for your application if at all possible.

I'd suggest torquing the prop on with just the big nut 1st then remove that nut & install the thin nut to torque against the prop hub, then finish up torqueing the thick nut to the thin nut last . I wouldn't grease the shaft but it is usually recommended to apply compound to the shaft with key removed and put the prop on by hand and rotate to smooth out & match the tapers of both shaft & hub. Clean off compound reinstallkey and install the prop. That optimum fit , max taper friction, will minimize the shear potential on the key .

Put the prop on the shaft without the key making sure it is all the way on. The take a black marker and mark the shaft all the around the back of the prop.

You will know if you've installed the prop properly with the key in when you see the black mark on the shaft.

If you don't you will ride the key. Not good.

The compound Sandy is talking about is Valve grinding cmpound and is used to "lap" the shaft.
