In the past thirty or so years I have gone through a few 6 and 11 gal. Seaward water heaters. Last year I replaced just the tank, which saved some money. I am able to go to their factory in S. Cal and they are always extremely helpful. I think his name is Tom, but he told me to be sure to replace the anodes. They go in place of the drain, and are about six inches long. I replaced the tank (with anode) on 3/10/2011. I decided to run my water out and check it yesterday. After one year it was almost gone. This is a BIG anode. Most of the boaters I spoke with in my Marina know nothing about changing these anodes, so I thought I would share this with you guys. I'm not sure if it's zinc or magnesium. I took a good picture but don't know how to put it on the post.

Great info. To place a photo here, you have to post it to a seperate site and link to it. A lot of folks here use photobucket. If you are unfamiliar with how to post pictures on the web, you can send it to me and I would be happy to do it for you.
The other option is to ask a 5 year old how to do it. That's embarrassing. DAMHIK!

I know that magnesium is not necessarily dangerous in low quantities but zinc contains trace amounts of arsenic I believe and is not good in any amount in especially when in a concentrated area like an 11 gal water heater.
Home water heaters come with a magnesium annode. There are replacement annodes for areas with high conductivity and/or very hard water that are made primarily of aluminum with a small amount of zinc int them. The ratio is something like one to 10 and the zinc is only there to fight the rotton egg smell.
Of course I am not a plumber so maybe I have that all backwards.

It is a Magnesium Anode about six iches long by 1 inch. IT IS RECOMENDED BY SEAWARD.

I've had the S1100 for 10 years. I've got no idea where the anode is, or if it even has one now OR where to buy one.

I know a lot of boaters with S100 who have never changed, or do not have an anode. I sent a photo of what was left of mine to Tom at Seaward. Asked him to take a look and asked would the tank be next after the anode had gone. Hope he replies, and if he does, will keep all infomed.(Tom is the manager. He is the one who personally told me to remove the drain and put in this anode)

Damn, working on my Atwood right now, didn't even think about the Anode. Where would this go on this particular 6 gal unit? I had a motorhome for over ten years and similar deal, never even looked at the water heater anode. That damn thing just worked flawlessly and I never had to touch it. Of course, with my boat...another story. :)
