Just bought a 36 ft Tiara in Wilmington N.C. looking for some advise should I go by land or sea. Time is not an issue, fuel burn vs trucking cost is an issue. I am experienced, 100 ton Capt. lic. but never made trip before.
Welcome all and any advise, recom. truck co Navigation route etc. Thanks

Dont know the route, but my opinion.
Cruising boat this time of year would be a nice trip if you have the time. There is a boat in my yard 40+ cruiser with extensive damage from a truck hall from IL.

Thats all I got, congrats thats a very nice boat.

Congratulations. Before you make a decision, get some quotes from reliable interstate boat haulers. In some cases, depending on boat height and beam, some states now require up to three assist cars! A friend of mine is All-Island Marine Transport in Sayville. Just call (589 3030) and tell Donna I sent you. When our daughter-inlaw's father wanted to move his 40 Azmet to Florida from New York, he was told that the cost and disassembly of the flybridge and other legal requirements made the land move prohibitive. He hired a captain to take it down by water. If it's doable, Donna will tell you. If it's not, she'll also tell you. Good luck. Hy

firstlight,

Best of luck with the boat.

I did a quick route (Navionics East App) from Wilmington to city island and came up with about 775 miles.
Do you know what gallons/hour at cruise will be?

That said, I'd ask myself these 2 questions - did I buy the boat to haul it around on a trailer? How many times will I have the opportunity to take this kind of trip?

I think this kind of trip by boat is a great adventure, not to be missed.

Congratulations on your purchase. As anti mono-hull as I am, I know Tiaras to be very nice boats.

As for your question; consider it a shake-down cruise. As Capt. Ron said: "If anything's going to happen, it's going to happen out there!"

Take it by water. Fuel is only going to get more expensive :-)

17 knot cruise at 5mpg (3.5/gph). Two hulls are better than one!

fThe route is down the river to the ICW and up to Wrightsville Beach. There you can go outside (the Atlantic) or up the ICW depending on weather or interest. At Morehead City (NC) you would go inside and follow the ICW. At the Neuse River you pick either the true ICW or the Pamlico Sound to get you up to Norfolk. Then you take the Cheasepeake Bay (the true ICW) or run outside to Ocean City MD (for fuel if necessary) and on to Atlantic City NJ. You have to go out in the Atlantic from the Manasquan River NJ to Lower NY Bay at the Sandy Hook. Then up the East River, Hell's Gate and the Sound.

I would get a smaller Garmin and recommend the GPS740 which has all the charts built in. There are plenty of fuel stops and restaurants on the way. You will burn 1000 gallons of diesel (more if gas) and the whole trip will cost more than trucking. You have to put your own value on the experience. I've run back and forth from North Jersey to Key West a dozen times and always enjoyed the ride.

aubv offers excellent insight.

I've both trucked my boat and run on the water.
Trucking was cheaper but add in the haul & splash at either end for a true comparision.

Personally, if the boat is mechanically sound and you have her outfitted properly (spares, etc). I'd run her on the water.
Cleaning after trucking was a chore. Road grime gets everywhere (and I shrink-wrapped).

Spent about a year in Charleston for work and ran the boat up from FL to use as an apartment and the trip up and back was worth the extra $$.

I helped another member bring home his New Silverton a few years ago it was this exact trip. If I recall it was 700-750 miles staying on the inside most of the way. This was a great/fun trip we traveled 8-10 days and it took us 5 days cruising at about 20 mgh whenever possible there where a lot of no wake and bridges that slow down the trip. I'm totally guessing but if your new boat gets at lest 3/4 of a mile per gallon then this trip should come in at about 1000 gallons I believe we burn 1200-1300 gallons, so average high at $5 dollars per gallon your at $5000 in fuel then you have to get to the boat you may fly there or rent a car (one Direction premium) and then you have docking and meals. There is a lot to calculate.

Just a guess but I'm thinking it would cost more to drive the boat up but as mentioned this is a great shake down cruise and a great way to get to know your new boat. Being time is not an issue I say go for it. Make sure you have a good spare parts kit on board and a decent tool kit.

Best of luck and enjoy your new boat!

You say that time is not an issue but cost is. If so, calculate your fuel burn at most efficient speed. This is where you should be getting several miles to the gallon. If you opt for the inland route you will be going slow most of the time anyway, so take your time, save money, and enjoy.

We did make this exact trip then continued up the Hudson I was just a guest crew member on Victoria Secret another member here, I mentioned to him today that you were considering this trip and he said he has a spreed sheet with all the details of the trip including running hours and fuel burn. Hopefully he will chime in but my earlier numbers were pretty accurate he told me we only burned 1100 gallons and you would most likely would do better assuming this is a diesel.

This was a fun trip!

Have a question. After sea trial and purchase of a 1998 Regal Commodore 2760 next week, I have a 6-hour ride from Kilmarnoc, VA to Woodbridge, VA to get her home. My concern is that it was hardly used last season and doing this kind of run right away until I know the boats faults may be questionable. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Go by water !!!! You bought a BOAT !!! The ICW is an enjoyable route, you stated that time was not an issue, just think about how accelerated your "comfort zone" will be on the new boat once you get her home after 700+ miles on the water.

If time is not an issue, move it on the water... and run it more than half the time at low RPMs/hull speed.

We brought our last (gas) boat -- somewhat similar in design to your Tiara -- up to Annapolis from near Ft. Lauderdale in 17 easy days (including a 3-day layover near Savanah), mostly on the inside, mostly at "sightseeing" speed. I think, from memory, our fuel burn average for the whope trip was something like 7 GPH (although I'd have to check those logs to be sure).

No doubt it would be a fun trip and I am planning on a long trip this spring, but by now, I am familiar with my boat.

A friend just bought a 39' Carver and I helped him on the first leg of the 130 mile trip home. Lots of things we didn't know like the paddlewheel speed indicator was way off, the GPS was very hard to use and kept losing signal. Also, we didn't know where many of the switches for lights were or where the seacocks were.

No real problems on that trip, but it might have been difficult on a much longer trip.

On a strange boat, you might not know what tools you may need and what spare parts you should have or how to change them.

Wiimington NC to City Island, NY? That's a no-brainer.... run it! You can actually stay inside all the way to Sandy Hook, and then you're outside for just a short distance to NY Harbor. Easy trip for a 36 footer.

Another + on bringing her home via water. Have it mechanically checked (as much as possible) before departure and stock up on spare parts and tools. I brought my 20 year old Silverton up from Southport NC to the upper Chesapeake. Ran the ICW and Dismal Swamp route. Thankfully, no mechanical issues the whole trip. It was absolutely the trip of a lifetime.

Frank, I'll call you a little later this morning. I'll be in town the next couple of days, then we will be taking the boat out Thursday afternoon to Cape Lookout through Easter Sunday. We are at Morehead City Yacht basin, which is a first class marina right off the ICW. Walking distance to a lot of good restaurants and the MC waterfront. Another good option is the Beaufort Town docks right in charming downtown Beaufort.

Great Boat! Year? Power? Pictures? Good luck on the survey. I love mine. If you've got the time, not much doubt by water is the better way to go. Probably cheaper, definitely better life experience. Those boats are beammy so hauling is pricey. I looked at bringing a few up from FL before I decided to shop closer to home. Good Luck!

Did Wilmington to VA in Saint Max. It was a great time and a great Nav challenge. I can tell you my recommendations for overnights for that leg of the trip. I have never been further north than Ft. Monroe, VA. I'm sure others can chime in on that leg.

My only recommendation is tuned props and a clean bottom.

Town dock is a good stop. Come in the inlet bear to starboard, it's right there.

Stop at Coinjock marina for fuel, cheap, and you can get food at their restaurant .

If the weather is good, when you get to the chessy take the outside and stop at Ocean City. Good eats there.

From Ocean Cith you make it home in one day if seas are good.

Good luck with the trip. Bring tools, spares etc....
