The party's over at Barnegat Bay's F-Cove

Without so much as a last call, the party looks like it might be over - at least for now - at one of Brick, NJ's most popular summer hot spots.
F-Cove, made up of two undeveloped man-made lagoons off Barnegat Bay in the shape of the letter 'F,' has been a gathering place for party-minded boaters for decades. It's located just north of the Mantoloking Bridge, west of the ICW channel.
But an effort by the federal government to curtail recreational use of the area appears to be heating up again. The latest salvo: a number of signs posted at the site which warn boaters that the area is closed beyond the signage. The explanation: "It is a national wildlife refuge." Bob has it right. Too many idiots that didn't know how to handle their liquor and be responsible for their environment....and I don't mean all the little sea creatures and endangered eel grasses. The garbage that was left behind and drunk boating just got out of hand. As always...it's the few rather than the many that ruin it for the rest of us.
The real problem with shutting down F-Cove, IMHO, is now those few idiots will go to other popular anchorages and bring their bad habits with them.

Only if you allow it.
Hull numbers or boat name and a call to the locals usually quells that for the season where I am. The perps know the first warning is the last warning. Second time is action.

Things just aren't handled that way in this area. Otherwise, F-cove would still be opened to those who treated it well and enjoyed it's location. Way too many boaters and Way to few enforcers.

You hit it right on the head. The party goers would not clean up after themselves. Mostly because they were too drunk to realize they left a mess. Still, it's a shame the area is lost now. My 2 cents.

I'm very disturbed about this 'closing' of F-cove thing! I know it had its problems, but all in all....it is a great, simple place, close to home to hang out and enjoy. Can they legally close a 'public wildlife' park off from us? Are ducks really more important than people? Somebody's got their priorities mixed up.
Its the one place nice and close to home that I allow my teenage kids to go to. So now they'll have to go thru the canal to go to Treasure Island??? Thanks, I'll let you know when my kids don't return but the duckies are fine.

I don't mean to pre-judge, but that was a big part of the problem in the first place. Without overly sterotyping, when was the last time you were able to see groups of unsupervised teenagers that cleaned up after themselves. Maybe that parent should take a few steps back and think that through. Again, I'm not saying his kids were a problem...but I've been there, and it sure wasn't the middle aged couple in a family cruiser with two preteens causing the problems nor was it the the older couple in the trawler or aft cabins. Again...GENERALLY speaking..
PS...look out Treasure Island hangers....here they come

I agree with you. I too have poked my head into F-cove once or twice. It wasnt my cup of tea, and your not-overly-stereotyping description, is the same impression I had when I promptly left. Unfortunately, I do on occasion like to anchor out next to treasure island. I have to say, the "I don't feel like cleaning up" crowd is already present there. It has come to the point that I carry a couple of trash bags with me when I go to treasure island, as well as a few other places, so I can clean up after these people. Trying to do my part to keep these places from being shut down. I would encourage others to do the same.

I am so glad I moved further south I grew up as a teenager in South Belmar. Once I met my wife her family had houses in Strathmere. At that point I rarely went back to Belmar. What a huge difference in people and their attitudes between the 2 shore communities. Stepping into Strathmere was like going back 30 years in time. Where we keep our boat in Tuckerton is more like camping then the marina jetset. But I like it that way, a few towns up and the attitudes really change. Tuckerton is very layback and the majority of the population are down to earth people. When I lived in the Belmar/ Neptune area it was more like who could sue who to get rich. These are just observations made decades ago. While I'm sure there are good people in northern central NJ I prefer where we are and points south.

My grandparents owned the property at the end of Wood street in Tuckertown for many years. I have a very long history with your town Billy. Lots of changes over the decades but glad to hear it's still maintaining some of it's charms.

John my wife's great Aunt 98 years old is selling her home in Tuckerton. At 98 she is still sharp but her body is starting to fail. She is at Saint Mary's nursing home in Cherry Hill.

My wife and I saw you last evening (5/28) on Tuckerton Creek. We were heading out and you were coming in at about 6:30 pm. The boat looks great and it was good to see you out!
