26' Searay was heading to Texas from La. and had an explosion. My friend who was also running the same area heard a call on the VHF. He went to give assistance and found out that the owner of the Searay had stored three 5 gallon cans of gas in the bilge. One fell against the engine and spilled it's gas in the bilge. Owner said there was a flash bang, somehow the hair on the back of his calves melted. The other two cans were removed from the bilge and strapped to the swim platform. They actually got the boat running again and the Searay ended up making it's destination. Attached is a picture of the gas can. The local Power Squadron is going to us this for a visual aid.

Tell that dude not to be buying any Lotto tickets or gambling at the boats, he used up his lifetime supply of luck on this one incident.

The story we heard was a lot worse. We were all surprised when he came in the marina under his own power, boat and him unharmed.

I'm a little confused. If 5 gallons of gasoline caught fire, I would think that that would make for a pretty good barn fire. Why or how didn't the other two cans of gasoline catch fire? Why didn't the whole boat go up in flames? Why isn't the can in the picture more burned up?

There was still unburned gas in the bilge after the explosion. After he tied up, I went over inn elect golf cart to check out the boat. I could smell gas from 10 yards away. I didn't let off the accelerator for fear of making a spark. The smell of gas was so strong they didn't sleep on it that night. Only thing we could think of was that the flash burnt off the oxygen in the engine room and put out the fire.

Add Coon Asses to the list of fools and drunks that the Lord watches over.:-) Is this the boat that was about 2 slips over from us at Contraband Days last year?

Nicest thing about not planning is, failure comes as a complete surprise and is not preceded by a period of stress, worry and depression.
