Steve: Check the Garmin USA website. They offer free or low-cost updates for many of their units. I updated my 498 last year. I ordered the update card/chip for 5 deer with a 50 deer deposit. They sent me the card; I installed it; shipped the chip back in the self-addressed envelope they included; and they creditted my charge card 50 deer. Total cost: 5 deer. Hy

I don't think it will Dave, but thanks for the offer. I'm gonna try giving Garmin a call today to see if they can help me out. I'll let you know what they have to say.

Are you in yet Dave?

I have a Garmin 2006 and use Map Source to create my routes on my PC. Then I transfer my routes to a user card via a Garmin USB reader. I then insert into the frount left side of my Garmin and upload user card. The user card is not like a simm card, it is thicker, more like a mini thumb drive. Is this something you may be looking for ?

j-d: The update was the latest version of their software. Supposedly, it sped up the unit and eliminated some preoblems. I honestly don't know whether it updated the charts themselves, though I believe it did. My "explanation" for quoting amounts in "deer" rather than dollars: The Chaparral Owners forum doesn't allow the use of "dollars" or the discussion of costs in money terms. Members have been using the word "deer" instead of dollars and "herd" instead of hundreds of dollars! I automatically posted here using those terms. It does sound a little absurd both here and on that forum, but - when in Rome, do as the Romans do. Hy

They are available on Ebay for about $50.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Garmin-GPS-data-card-USB-programmer-reader-cable-320-00162-01-/180843212711?pt=GPS_Maps_Software&hash=item2a1b186fa7

I gave one to Hogan a couple of years ago not sure he still has it. You may consider hard wiring a serial cable to your unit, I used it to transfer files that way. I run a cable into the cabin this enabled me to view the GPS live while underway and also allowed me to transfer files at will.

But $50 may be the way to go.

So here's the update:

1. I cleared my backtrack memory (was 100% full) and now the unit does not lose satellite reception.

2. Spoke to Garmin today and they confirmed that this was the right thing for me to do.

3. Garmin is sending me a software update for my unit as it hasn't been updated in several years. They're charging me $50 and when I send their card update back they credit me the $50 so its a free upgrade.

4. That leaves my New York chart which has an upgrade available but Garmin says I can shop around on the price, I should be able to get it for less than $150.

Brad, we have the same type of card for our chartplotter, it's not an SD card, it kinda resembles a stick of chewing gum, right? Were you able to update your chart with that software? Garmin says that the new charts were updated February of 2012. If the card can be updated using your card reader and a download from Garmin I would like to borrow it if I could. What do you think?

Dave, good luck with your launch this weekend, the long range forecast looks good.

Steve,

If this is the reader that may or will work, you may borrow it. It has worked fine for me for the last few years uploading my planned routes created on my PC.

Update,

So I uploaded the new Garmin software and noticed some nice improvements....too many to list, but well worth the effort of contacting Garmin.

As far as my specific charts go I'm probably going to order a new blue chart as Garmin came out with revised charts for our area this past February 2012. That being said I'm gonna hold off on borrowing your card programmer Brad, but thanks so much for letting me borrow it. I'll keep it in mind if I ever need it in the future.
