What a maroon. Too many what ifs. What if he couldn't get on the boat. What if the engines didn't start. And how do you bring your boat into a marina on a coast that just got devastated.

Now, if it was a Trojan Yacht he was rescuing...:-)

Yep, just a couple of miscues and it could have turned out differently.

Maroon? Hey, if the guy wants to risk his own life to save his boat, it doesn't make him a MORON. Sounds like quite an adventure to me.

not sure why this makes him a "maroon"... he was only a few miles offshore, obviously had the resources to be helicoptered there and probably a back up plan if the boat didn't start.

i like people who can take action and don't rely on others like towers, insurance companies and the coast guard.

well done.

Makes you wonder how many other very expensive, slightly scuffed but ready to run boats just drifted off that day and got written off.

Thanks,

I will tell you why he is a maroon. Because if he needed to be rescued, rescue personel who were involved in saving lives during one of the worst disasters, would have had to been diverted to look for jerky who wanted his boat back. Thats why i say he was a maroon.

+1

He doesn't impress me as a "Hey hold my beer and watch this" kind of guy. It looked to be a well thought out and executed plan.

But the "disaster" was months ago. Fair weather and, from the looks of it, fairly calm seas and a boat that looked like it just came off the showroom floor. Personally, I'd go get it in a heart beat.

I assumed when reading the article that he accepted that he would not receive help if he needed it once the helicopter left. I could be wrong. Takes really big ones to do what he did.

I cant imagine what you guys would say about me. I have trolled 12 miles offshore in florida on a 2 seater jet ski, fished the inlet on an inflatable dinghy. Hell, I would have paddled a surf board offshore if I could get my 57 Bertram back. But then again, I believe you only live once; Moron!!!!!

If this happened days after the emergency was over I think he did the right thing.
It was a very short swim to the boat from where he dropped in the water and the chopper that he paid for was right there if he did have a problem.

I might have been tempted try to save the boat. Other than the swim to the boat I'm not sure what big risk he was taking. If the boat was still upright it obviously did not have any significant hull damage. I'll presume that he had visually confirmed that the boat was in reasonably good shape and that his dingy was intact and availabe if needed.

It sounds like he caused the hull damage by hitting debris since he didn't mention taking on water prior to starting his engines.

poorly planned, if you ask me. he managed to board his boat and get it started, but then the helo departed and he was by himself, literally, with a boat in unknown condition. a hull and engine survey is always recommended prior to anyone bringing their new-to-them boat to their home marina on it's own bottom. i would think that would be even more important with a boat very possibly damaged in a storm and floating in the ocean. if you read thru the whole article, you'll find the boat did have significant issues (including a gash in the hull) and he had issues bringing it back. not saying i wouldn't try to save my boat, but maybe i'd arrange a tow rather than jumping into a freezing ocean and running it back myself. then again, many of us wouldn't have the capital to hire a helo like he did, either. if i had that kind of cash, i'd probably just let the insurance company sort it out.

I see some have suggested that he should have gone about it differently.

I believe he had very few options available to him since this just happened a day or 2 before:

Kind of makes you wonder how the guy can afford a late model Bertram '57..Probably not afraid of the world. He's the kind of "maroon" I want on my side in a fight....We are now so "safety" conscious, I wonder if America will ever do anything great again...

Yep... Looks like most folks would call their lawyer first, then their insurance agent followed by their shrinks... And maybe FEMA too in case they could get some free bottled water and ice.

Sad.
