I need to replace the battery on my new-to-me boat. The generator is a 7.3 Kohler. I am thinking just a group 24 deep cycle marine-rated battery. Is there any need to go with group 27 on a genset? Advice and input appreciated.
The only thing that works on an old boat.....is the Owner.
The group 24 is fine but there are several sizes in group 24. I changed my 7 year old battery on my 8kw Westerbeke Diesel genset last week and went with 1000 marine cranking amps instead of 650. The glo plugs use a bit when preheating so I wanted adequate reserve. You want a marine starting battery not a marine deep cycle battery, two different animals.

I like the Optima starting batteries. Very little maintenance, just check the connections once a year. So far 4 years on my genset with no problems. A little pricey but for me worth it as access is VERY difficult. Abouttime
