Charles, if you want to extend the range, the Wave is the way to go... plug and play, easy to use, etc... we have one and love it.

I read with fascination all the information that you Guys put together on that topic...Way to much for me..
A boating friend of mine over on the Left Coast is sending me a unit from "PDQ Connect" A Slate 1000 N, he says it will do what I need...
You Folks are well advanced in this stuff!

Pascal...where did you get your Wave unit? Went to the Wave site, looked at 1/2 dozen of their dealer sites and found NO Wave products on any of them. What model do you have? Thanks.

Call or e-mail a few dealers they will send you the literature.
I personally use the EC high power series with the built in access point. Big bucks but it works great. I have tested the ROGUE units and they are nice and easy to use and (DIY) install.

TWC, Cox, Bright House, Comcast team up for Wi-Fi roaming
Subscribers from Time Warner Cable, Bright House Networks, Comcast, Cablevision and Cox Communications will be able to log in to each other’s Wi-Fi hotspots, thanks to a new roaming agreement.
The deal among five of the top six largest cable operators in the nation will give their respective subscribers access to more than 50,000 Wi-Fi hotspots

Dang, Bill, that's awesome. Except from looking at the coverage map it's all NJ/NYC and such only.
The Rogue isn't bad at all. As Bill said, it's very easy to install and use. My only issue to total lack of APs to connect to. Yet again I'm in FL and just got back from the Bahamas and it's been nothing but cellular coverage. What APs are there to connect to have horrible speed. With 4G coming in everywhere, it's going to be a death-blow to Wi-Fi from what I'm seeing/experiencing.

I see a need for both in my area. Most of the Cable Hotspots I can connect to run about 10mbps DL and when loaded 4-5mbps. I love Verizon LTE but I could quickly have a huge bill since there are no all you can eat Verizon LTE 4G plans. So on the move I use VZW LTE 4G and AT&T HSPA+ and when anchored or in the marina WiFi. I will find out where Cox Communications have their WiFi Hotspots located Kurt. I suspect it's not on the map. I know they are big from southern Maryland to Newport News Va.

The number of WiFi access points for public use is predicted to increase 4X in the next year. Then again so are the number of Verizon LTE sites and markets going to increase.

Bill, I'll keep an eye out for these new cable-company hotspots. I've got Comcast internet at home and work, so I'm good to use their hotspots as soon as I find one :-)

Kurt there is no grandfathered unlimited 4G Verizon LTE service. If so I have not been able to find it.
The Comcast Hotspots come up as Xfinity on the connection manager.

For smartphones there is unlimited grandfathered 4G. They've been known to throttle 3g on the grandfathered plans, but not 4G as of yet. I pull the SIM out, put it in my Pantech UML290 dongle and plug that into my Cradlepoint Router. The Pantech shows up in my online VZW account and the account still shows unlimited. Another way to do it if you're not grandfathered is to add a tethering plan and then remove it. Adding the tethering plan to a newer account gives the smartphone unlimited usage. Removing it a few days later still leaves the unlimited usage for that SIM card. It might be a glitch in their system, but I keep reading about people doing it recently.
They're also offering 4gigs for for the price of 2 ($30/month). I've personally never gone over 2 gigs (except for the time my brother-n-law - MR. "I Love Sprint" used my hotspot to download 8 gigs worth of crap as he was roaming! :-)
No Xfinity hotspots seen via Rogue here in Stuart, FL. I won't hold my breath for when we get back to MD either. It's a great offer and an awesome service, but I think it's really only in and around your area as of the present time. Hopefully it will be expanded.

I typically use 2 to 4 gigs a day when working. Some of our propogation prediction programs are huge. It is unusual from me to use less then 40 gigs a month. This is why I spread my usage out between AT&T HSPA+, VZW LTE and WiFi when on the boat. Since I own the WiFi system and pay for the business class backhaul at the marina I tend to use that as my primary when playing "dock Mary".
