Stonington is one of our favorite spots. too. We often just pick up a mooring or stop at Skipper's for lunch or dinner.
Watch Hill is nice but very busy on warm weekends, with lots of boats rafting up just off the beach. Dogs without leaches aren't permitted but you'll see lots of them running loose. Many rafters walk their dogs on the beach as well.
To get in, you'll have to follow the channel inside the barrier beach. It's all a no-wake zone and once you venture in there, you'll see why. The channel is a bit narrow in places and there are often people swimming really close to the channel. Once you get in and turn in behind Watch Hill, there is ample room to anchor provided it isn't already crowded with boats. It can get a little crazy in there with wakes and kids in inflatables but it's still fun, especially if you are rafted up with friends.
Take a good look at a chart or your chart plotter before you go in for the first time just to get an idea of the channel and the depths.
Since you're based in Stonington, another nice inside cruise is up the Pawcatuck River to Westerly. The river is well marked and there is fuel available.
Hope you enjoy your summer!
Bill

Watch Hill can get crowded, but is still a great place, and very family orientated.
Dogs are not allowed as much as everyone drives the speed limit.

Last year they I saw people get fined for bringing their dogs on the beach. Another couple brought their dog in the dingy and were told not to let it on the beach.

Dogs are no longer allowed during the day.. I did talk to a couple walking dogs one A.M. and was told that before 8 am and after 6 pm its tolerated. Too bad because back in the day my dog LOVED it there.
