Don't know, but you can use drill bits as a "feeler gauge". The snug one is the correct size.

With only a 1/16 of difference a with the packing nut lose either or seem like they would work

I packed it with 3/16 and it seem loose. I packed it with 1/4 which fit snug

I don't want to heat up the box if 1/4 is to tight and I dont want a leaky shaft when i spash if the 3/16 is to small

Use 1/4 GFO packing and it won't be a problem. And you can run it dripless.

The two most common elements on Earth are oxygen and stupidity.

Great, now take it to NBR.

I use 1/4" GFO in my 1985 Carver 3227. Yours should be the same. I'm not sure about running them dripless. I think you need some water to lubricate the packing or it will overheat and wear too fast or damage your shaft. (Nobody wants that!)

Check this out, it helped me:

You can run it dripless. Tighten it just till it stops dripping and you'll be fine.

You might also care to consider Duramax Ultra X packing material . It looks like it may be yet a step above the Gore GFO though both should do very well with no water drip required, .

Should be a snug fit. If you can push 1/4" into the packing gland, then that's the size.

Thanks, yep it's 1/4". 1/4 fit nice and snug. The port side had 3/16 in it and starboard 1/4". Why I don't know but when I asked the question I only had pull the port side and the 3/16 didn't seem right.. Today I pulled the packing on the starboard side and it had 1/4"

Interesting. Looks like a GFO knock off. As you said, looks like either would work.
