The first tropical storm is really early this year. Alberto is off South Carolina and the coast is under a tropical storm watch. I hope everyone down there is battened down and safe.

The current forecast path runs off the Outer Banks of NC. There may be some good surf out there. Watch for OBX Boater to get some good photos.

According to Jeff Masters, " Formation of an early season tropical storm from an old frontal boundary, like occurred with Alberto, is not a harbinger of an active hurricane season--it's more of a random occurrence". What we have to watch for is early seasons storms forming in the Caribbean. Currently we have a chance of rain and relatively light winds and seas forecast here in the Cape Lookout area.

We Floridians appreciate the concern but hasten to advise a lowkey approach to this wee little thingie. Be safe for sure but standby for the real stuff later in the "season".

Cheers!

Thanks for the reassurance Bill. Too early for alarmism.

When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down "happy." They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~John Lennon

The cycle of East Coast tropical weather events begins.

Make sure your Flood policy is paid up (that's if congress passes an extension), learn what exclusions are in your home owner's policy concerning Wind/Water and remember, You are NOT in GOOD HANDS, You will NOT have a GOOD NEIGHBOR after a storm and if USAA will screw a respected Admiral out of a legitimate home owner's claim, what do you think they will do to you.

Good Luck!!

I cannot agree with the last comment. I'd bet that USAA very seldom makes a claim error. If they do, and they discover that to be a fact, they would cover the loss. They have a peerless reputation with me,a longtime member of over 60 years.

Cheers!

We tried to slip a short training mission on the ICW in NE FL this afternoon. Underway 1400 to about 1600 when the winds picked up and the sky darkened to the north. Probably gusted into the upper 20s then eased off into a soft rain and that was about all. I take it that was the track reversal the forcasters mentioned.

It might be a "wee little thingie" but it does indicate that the water temperature is already warm enough for tropical storm development. Not surprising considering the really mild winter we've had in the South. So I guess it's only the first of many.

All things considered though I'd rather have a dozen "wee little thingies" than ONE city-killer hurricane.

It really means very little

What is more important is water temp in the pacific. Looks like the La Nina has faded and temps are normal or slightly above normal. Still time for an El Niño to develop in time for the peak of the season... That would be nice!

After Irene last summer I finally got a transfer switch, generator and gas caddy to get ready for any future events. Even though Irene was just a tropical storm when it got here, we still lost electric for 4 days, some were out for a week. I looked into converting the genny to nat gas but in the end it's pretty expensive, although the best long term solution.
