Factors such as weight, hull shape, hull condition, water conditions, etc. may drastically affect consumption figures.
Most often the numbers one hears about are reckoned at wide open throttle. A traditional Rule of Thumb is 1 gal/hr for every 10 HP at normal operating power. Not difficult to start to amass your own actual calculations. Why don't you stake out a decent visual range and start to calculate your own situation. Quite easy and well within the ability of moct boat owners.

The good news is it has to be less than "225 gallons per hour."

Modern four stroke diesels will produce about 20 hp for each gph burned. Therefore, 225gph would be about 4500 hp. Gasoline is less efficient and would burn about 30% more or, at 225 gph, would reflect a 3500hp motor. That is, of course, maxed out.
A forty foot open fisherman with triple 1100s could do that. Or perhaps four "smaller" engines.
Sounds like decimal was left out and the fuel burn is actually 22.5 gph or somewhere around $100 per hour. Hardly more than hiring a babysitter.

I think he was referring to a 225 HP Honda OB an asking what the GPH burn rate is.

A 225 Yamaha we rent on a 23' Godfrey seems to get 2-3mpg at mainly cruise speeds.

I was mainly trying to get an idea because my fuel gauge was down and I wanted to sort of have a rough idea so I'd know about when to think about getting gas. Since then I messed around with my fuel sending unit and got the gauge working again. I do have an interest in knowing the gph and couldn't find it anywhere in my manual. Thanks for the input.

I have a Bayliner 265 with a single 250 hp injected Mercrusier that burns 12-13 gph at 25 mph. That's 2 mpg. The numbers come from a fuel rate meter and GPS.

I don't think any manufacturer is going to list such as it will vary too much based on the vessel design.

17 knot cruise at 5mpg (3.5/gph). Two hulls are better than one! |
