I have a 18.5 inch dual Ongaro trumpet horn on my Sea Ray. Last year one of them decided to not work and now this year the other one quit. Anyone know the life expectancy of these horns? I have had the boat for five years and don't know when they were put on the boat by the previous owner.

Mine has been installed since 2007 so I have no idea how long they should last. Mine are both working fine. You want to make sure they are mounted on a downward angle so water can not collect inside the trumpets.

We had a lot of rain this weekend. If water got in does that mean they are shot?

It should be able to take water but not for extended periods of time, it must be mounted so it is self draining.

Open up the horn, insert a folded piece of fine sandpaper between the points and sand. Coat points with lightweight oil. Try this before attempting to adjust the tension screw. This is what Ongaro recommends.

"emery cloth" is a better choice for this. A fine grade.

Checking the wiring to the horns is also a good troubleshooting step. They draw considerable power and loose or corroded connections will lower the voltage enough that they won't sound.

I'm thinking these horns have a lifetime warranty but self repair might be easier and less costly than removing them and shipping them back to the manufacturer just to have them clean the contacts.

BTW: If these horns are like mine, the screw to remove the cover is underneath the "Ongaro" emblem. Pry it off with a knife or thin screwdriver.

I haven't needed to open mine but great ideas for repairing them guys. If I ever have the need to repair them I will try all of the above.

I had a similar problem on a Sea Ray years ago. It turned out to be a faulty ground. The horns were fine.

I did my troubleshooting with a 12V jumpstart battery. When that was connected, all was fine. When connected to the switched boat wiring, it was intermittent. Sometimes the switches fail, too. They're easy to troubleshoot by jumping the contacts with a wire.

I went down to the boat and took apart the horns and cleaned up the contacts and put a light coat of oil on them. They worked intermittently so I guess I have to try what Al did to see if it is the wiring. I know the horns are good.
