My boat came with a KVH M3 sat tv system installed. It is the DX? version meaning it has a control box. I can choose either sat provider, I just need the receiver. The challenge is nobody at either Direct or Dish has any freaking clue what I'm talking about. And KVH wants to refer me to a local retailer. Those guys don't seem to want to return my phone calls since I already have a system.

I don't care which service I get. I could go DISH and receive HD but I really dont' care. I just want the thing to work. I seem to remember somone discussing this and posting a special number at one of the providers. Anybody have any suggestions?

You need to make this easy I have a KHV M-3 pick direct TV purchase a SIM card and get the matching reciever if it didn't come with one. I have the 800 number needed to talk to KVH so they can tell direct what you have. Are you sure you have the M-3 DX and not the older G-6?
A new reciever from KVH is available from most of the discount marine electronics places.
I think CalTexFla used to have the KVH M3 DX. I have the straight KVH M-3 on Direct TV and I have been very happy with it.

There is actually a department at Direct TV that helps out with Tracvision.

I had some issues with ours, and finally they transferred me to that department after trying about a dozen different things. I would try to ask them for that department straight up.

Thanks everyone. Very helpful. Made a little headay with directv. They are telling me to buy my own receiver then they can activate it. But I can't find anywhere on the kvh site what receiver works it only mentions dish receivers with the M3dx. I think a d12 receiver will work but not sure. And large range of prices for a kvh d12. Found from $78 to $283. And the $283 was at defender.

I believe you can use almost any Ku satellite reciever on this set up because the remote tracking is done by the digital box. I would verify the LNB in the dome. The M3 will only pick up Direct TV's HD on the Ku band this set up will not work on the Ka band only the big dollar M-7 will do both the Ku and Ka mixed satellites. The satallites position I use is 101 degrees I use the KVH Direct TV 12VDC reciever on my M3 but my unit is not the DX. Carefull check with Defender they don't supply the SIM card with the reciever. Which ever home receiever you pick make sure it is set up for the Ku band Direct programming I get over 300 channels on the non DX M3. Dish doesn't have the number of channels Direct does and they still transmit many HD and standard channels on Direct 101 bird.
Here is a cut and paste about the subject from KVH,
DIRECTV® is currently the only major satellite TV provider in North America to broadcast programming using both Ka- and Ku-band satellites, with almost all DIRECTV HDTV programming being broadcast from Ka-band satellites. Reception of Ka-band broadcasts requires different antenna and receiver technology, so most domed mobile satellite TV antennas, including the TracVision M-series and R-series, only support Ku-band reception.

For boaters: KVH’s TracVision HD7 satellite TV system features patent-pending Tri-Rod Antenna Design (TriAD™) technology that allows it to track DIRECTV’s three primary satellites (two in Ka-band, and one in Ku-band) simultaneously with a single antenna, making it the perfect solution for mariners who want to watch DIRECTV HD on the water.

I will see if I can find a reciever that will mate with your M3-DX does it need to be 12VDC or can it be AC powered? The reason I bought the M-3 was it was an all 12VDC unit.

So I finally landed at the right place at directtv. I can get a KVH D12 box, hook it up and they can activate the service. For future reference if calling DirecTV you ask for the KVH special teams area.

One interesting thing is purchasing vs. leasing the box. It can either be an owned or a leased box. An owned box will be about twice as expensive ($150 vs. $75) for the same receiver (in this case a D12) than a leased box. this accounts for the price differences on line. But with an owned box, you can keep it even if you cancel the account. With a leased box you are obligated to return the receiver if the account is closed. Closing the account is different than "suspending" the account which I can do for up to 6mos each year when the boat is on the hard and not in use.

It takes a while, but once you get to that department they are very helpful.

I agree years ago I had the MSN TV/Internet box called the KVH TracNet 100 it required a special flashed Verizon EVDO data card PCMCIA type and they were at the end of their support lifecycle. They got me a data card and activated the service. I was a pretty nice device too bad they didn't continue the line now that Verizon has LTE.
I really love KVH products but am super PO'ed at them for raising the price of the Fleet Broadband services. There is no longer a $20.00 low user plan now it's $55.00 a month and you can NOT suspend the service every 6 months. Rumor has it they are going to raise the rates in the near future.

Well.. still a work in progress. Ended up buying, and am still waiting for, a Dish Network VP211K which is the other receiver listed as working with an M3 DX. I ended up going with Dish for two reasons. One is that HD is only an option with Dish. I can't get HD on Direct using an M3. I may not even end up getting HD but wanted to keep my options open. The second reason is Dish has a better pay as you go program. No minimum contract time. Pay month to month. They send you an invoice each month, if you don't pay they just shut it off. No charge to turn back on. DirectTV you could only have it shut off for max 6mos out of each 12mo period according to their customer service folks.

So once I get the receiver I'll attempt to install it. But I have a sinking feeling I'll have some software issue that will require something be updated by someone. I'm sure I'll end up on the phone with Tech support for someone. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Thought I would post another update. I received my Dish VP211k receiver, connected it and followed the setup proceedures from KVH AND...... Nothing. Doesn't work. It appears the system is tracking the proper satellites fine. But when the receiver goes to download the current Switch software from the satellite it errors out about 1/3 thru each time.

I called KVH tech support. After reviewing my system config, they determined that all of my software for the controller and dish are out of date and need to be updated. Is this easy or cheap? No. Basically they said my best bet was to talk to a dealer. But the ones I've talked to are not very interested in service for someone who doesn't need to buy anything. So the alternative is to do it myself. This means buying a USB to serial adapter so my laptop can talk to the controle box. Downloading Hyper Terminal software to communicate. Then once I confirm I can "talk" to the controle box I pay $150 to KVH to give me the updated software and walk me through installing it. Then they "hope" the Dish receiver will be able to download the Switch software from the satellite.

For you tech guys this may sound like a walk in the park but for me I am assuming it will be a complete pain. I've purchased the cable and downloaded the Hyperterminal software. Plan to go to boat today and see if it works. Then call KVH and go through update process. All this for TV on the boat.
