Looking for the best value for TV service on a liveaboard boat. I am in Bellport at Beaver Dam Marina.
I have heard DishTV is good, any thoughts ?
Just basic TV is good, maybe WiFi as well ?

For "basic tv" I would try a regular antenna mounted to a piling. The networks broadcast on air in HD, the quality is actually better than cable, fios or dish.

Agree and if you don't have a newer tv with a digital tuner you need a digital box.
If you need a digital box, let me know, I may still have one sitting around.
For internet, see if you have a optimum hot spot near your marina. If you do, then there are ways to boost the signal into your boat or you have to sit outside to get the signal. Also you need to be a optimum subcriber to get their signal.
if you have a phone and unlimited data, then hot spot is a option too!

I installed a 26" Vizio with built-in HDTV antenna, a Blu-Ray player and a Glomex antenna on my arch and the entire package was about $4000. TV receives 20+ over the air channels for free, reception is great unless the boat is rocking a lot.

I'm not sure how much broadcast TV you will get in Bellport. I don't recall getting many stations in Westhampton Beach last summer. It's too far to get the NYC stations, at least for my little amplified antenna it is.

Tom,
I am located in Patchogue and can only received a few channels via digital TV, mostly spanish speaking. You could use Dish Network with an antenna installed either on the dock or a piling.
I have been using Dish Network for years without any problems.
As for WiFi, I have been using my cellphone as a hotspot and use it all over the south shore.

Dave.....I also have the card....he will just need to activate the account in his name. Next time you guys are over at the AYC....call my cell....I'll drop it off over there.
PS.....I also have a pair of Weaver swim platform davit brackets thingies.....if someone can use them.

OK, here is the question of the day that will highlight my ignorance with these matters.
I have unlimited data on my iPhone. How can I make it a hotspot to use with my laptop?
Although I have FIOS at hone, I have also recently gotten an optonline user name and password (Thanks to my Uncle). What, if anything, can I do to pull that signal in stronger at my dock so I can get on the internet from down there? Right now I don't have an optonline signal there.

To make iphone a hotspot you have 2 choices.
1 legal, 1 not.
Legal one is call provider and ask for tethering.
I think it is $10 a month but they will limit your data plan.
Illegal one, which is not illegal, but apple will not like it and claim it will void your warranty is to jailbreak your phone.
Once jailbroken, you can download apps outside of itunes using cydia.
One aap is my-wifi which allows you use BT or wireless to turn your phone into a hot spot so you can connect a ipad to it or a computer.
To boost internet signal you need a rogue or other device to boost signals and pull them in.
Other device includes repeater with DD-WRT software (little technical to setup).
Rogue works the best but is pricey.
For basic internet repeater works good.

Thanks! I was in Staples a little earlier today and they had "Zoom 4506" Travel Router that looked pretty good. It said on the box that you can hook up ypur phone to it and then get Wifi on other devices.
Naturally the kid working in that section was of no help.
I'm not sure if I should take a chance on it or not.

That sounds interesting.....I was considering swaping my Verizon air card....for the Verizon hot spot for the coach....but can't until mid Sept because of my " contract ". I would like to hear more info on this device also.

I was going to suggest a Glomex with a booster and a cable/antenna switch in case you go somewhere with cable. Get a cheap TV. Personally, I've still got the original 13" TV/VCR combo with a converter box. No cable at the marina. I'm not paying for a dish to use a couple of times a month. I get the local and national news and about 8 other stations. Works great for me.

They have the jailbreak for the 4s untethered now. So it should work.
I will follow my procedure and do it. Just need to find some time and get a solid connection.

Here are the instructions I wrote:
Ok for those that want to do this, do it at your own risk!
1) Backup iphone using itunes.
2) Go to http://intelliborn.com/mywi.html
3) Click where is says to click here for details.
4) Locate package for your phone (I used redsnow)
5) Download redsnow
6) Download the latest IPSW file for your phone from apple (this is your current firmware)
7) Run Redsnow or whatever jailbreak program you downnload
8) The jailbreak package will ask for your IPSW.
9) It will patch IPSW then ask you to enter DFU mode on phone (it really directs you on what to do)
10) Once complete, go to Cydia on your phone.
11) Download the Mywi 5.5 software thru cydia (will cost you $19.95)
12) COnfigure phone as hotspot
13) your in business - enjoy!
Oh, you can still use itunes to sync and backup but I think if you restore you lose it and have to install cydia again. But you won't have to pay the $19.95 again.

WiFi TV su&ks and it has a negative effect on all the other users on the system. If the system administrator checks your usage even Comcast Xfinity has caps your MAC address may get blocked. As far as IPTV over cell services if you don't have Verizon LTE 4G forget it the downloads take forever and it will probably not be within your terms of service with your cellular provider. With Verizon the data usage will climb real fast.
Dish Networks? I prefer Direct TV it seems to have more programming and better channels even though the majority are SD and not HD with my KVH set up.
As far as Niel's system a good over the air system will work wonders for network viewing. I went from recieving less then 10 stations to well over 25 when upgrading to the Glomex system.
