Go fast boater allegedly DWI kills a young man who was just trying to head out early west of the Robert Moses bridge to a fishing tourney with his buddies this am.
Hits the boat with the guys going fishing. Crews out all morning and day looking for the missing guy while his family watches from up on the bridge. Finally found him. Very sad.
Serious boating DWI accidents getting to be an annual thing on the GSB. Not good.

Agree. Terrible news. I heard the pan, pan, pan around 12pm today, that they were looking for a 6'2" male in water near Robert Moses Causeway. I did not know this was since early am. Terrible news!

That is terrible. DWI is one thing, but o we need these guys going 90+. They are not called offshore racing boats for a reason. Limit the speed in the bay. Boats doing 20mph and boats doing 90mph don't mix well.

Unbelievable. F'ing drunk at 5 AM! I keep my boat at Timber Point West where the SC Police is located and saw the 25' being towed in when I was headed out fishing. So sad.

The bay was a beautiful place years ago when there were few go-fast boats, the speed limit was (if I remember correctly) 12 mph in the state channel and people had respect for others. I hope this guy gets the max!

Sad Barbara, I don't think there was ever a speed limit in the bay, you are correct about the state channel though

Sad.. The definition of go fast as changed over the years with speed and power creeping up on center consoles. When you put 3 or 4 350hp outboards on the back of a contender, you have a "go fast".. And many of them!

Walt, correct. No speed limit in the bay but yes to the state channel. Boating was very different back then but then again, so was everything else!

Great South Bay has a 45mph speed limit and State Channel speed limit is 12mph. If the speed limit were to be enforced the law enforcement resources wouldn't be available to answer emergency calls. We who know and love the GSB understand the problem is not the boating community it's the people who can buy a boat they haven't got the skills or understanding how to operate. The operator of the go fast is charged with BWI I think it should be upgraded to manslaughter. It won't bring back a guy who was just going fishing but it might send a message to others who drink and drive when they shouldn't.

Brite, I agree with you to some extent but there were many times I was out on the bay and saw law enforcement hanging at a marina, sitting on the side of a channel, etc and not involved in any emergency calls. If the speed limit in the state channel is truly still 12 mph and they enforced it, they'd have plenty of money to increase marine patrols!! I remember years ago the 12 mph speed limit was posted along the state channel but they're no longer there.

Very sad. I think the guy had a couple of young kids. I was out for a few hours yesterday afternoon/evening. Took a ride over to Freeport and back and there was no shortage of people who looked like they might be BWI. Saw one guy as I was entering Woodcleft Canal that was coming out on a 34 footer and looked like he could barely stand up. The guy with him on the boat looked worse. I tell my wife all the time that you have to always assume the other guy is either drunk or has no idea about what he's doing. Chances are you have a 50/50 shot at being right.

I'm looking to get back in this year after a 2 year boating hiatus. I just don't understand the mentality of "some" (not all of course) of these guys/girls with these boats doing 105 on the bay......where the hell is the common sense? I just don't get it. Dumb stupid children with expensive toys with no clue at all......this poor guy and his family.....

Saw pictures on the Hatt forum.. The go fast poked a big hole on the side of the sportsfish, at the forward corner of the cockpit and aft corner of cabin.

The Hat was struck on its port side meaing the Hat was the stand on vessel and the speedboat was the give way vessel. Not only was he speeding but failed to yield to the Hat.

Guys this happened at 5am in the morning ... It was still DARK OUT .
So running at speed, in the dark , drinking and apparently drugs were found on the vessel after it was righted and boarded

There is some light out at 5 AM this time of year but on Saturday at 5 AM there was rain and limited visibility of 1 to 3 NM. I was up getting ready to go fishing but I waited for the weather to clear. I checked the NOAA marine forecast and that's what it said. I remember thinking it's not worth going out in a boat, without radar, with my family. I hope that S.O.B goas away for a long time.

They should take this guy out and use him for chum for the shark tournament! What a sick person to drive like that in that condition. This guy will be lucky to ever see daylight!

If you are a Newsday or optimum subscriber they have plenty of articles and even some pictures. Real shame. They even mentioned that it was national bwi awareness week.

My friend of mine was killed in almost the same spot by a drunk boater who ran his boat over and just kept going several years ago.
