Poll Question:
The fusion 700 thread made me wonder...
When on your boat, what do you use the most as a music/audio source?

You have no place for all of the above Pascal, SIRIUS is the #1 service I use it is part of my Garmin GXM-51 weather reciever's package, followed by local FM stations since they started carrying conservative hosts in the Phila / South Jersey market. The only media I don't use is tapes of any kind. Bill

I use Pandora on iOS. Most often, I have it plugged in via USB to keep the batteries charged, but when I want to move around the boat, I use AirPlay.

I currently use my 60gb mp3 player. It's nice to have all my music and play lists available (40gb). My next boat radio will have a built in HD like my car stereo.

Actually #1 would be the sound system in my brain. External to that, we use the XM/Sirius satellite stations that come with my KVH Direct TV. Second would be CDs on the simple Jensen on the flybridge and next the same CDs through the Blu ray Player in the salon. I can pipe the KVH or the Blu Ray throughout the boat, each area has its own volume control. Fact is we very seldom listen to music unless on a day long non stop cruise. Oh yeah, on rare occasion we use Pandora through the Blu Ray when at the marina.

I use my iPod with an FM transmitter, not sure if that's what the next to last option is there, but not familiar with the terms used so I'm guessing not (so I didn't vote), but that's what I use most of the time.

I generally use Pandora from my Iphone/Ipad which is connected to a bluetooth receiver that we connected to an aux on the back of the boat's head unit. Very convenient being able to control volume/skip songs from the phone in my pocket.

The poll is flawed. I had to pick "other", but not because I'm listening to eight track tapes or records (you forgot "reel to reel"), but because "SD card" wasn't an option.
I replaced my CD equipped stereo with one that has no CD but has sockets for USB and SD cards.
In actual practice, though, I seldom use it and can't use it if I'm on the flybridge.

In what order? We never have the Ipod on while on the move. In fact I leave my hearing aids out. Given Windoze and Apple refuse to cooperate I cannot control the Ipod where it is located.

Not to derail but somebody mentioned vinyl. Last Christmas I got a turntable and software that connects to my computer via USB and I have digitized most of my old record collection and put it on a memory stick. The sound quality is much better than I expected and in some cases where I have the same music on vinyl and CD, the vinyl quality is richer. The software allows for compensating for scratchy records, but most of mine were only played a few times and put on tapes back in the day. I doubt I'd played any records for 25 years before I got this turn table. Alot of my old stuff from the 70s and 80s is hard to find on CD or MP3 and isn't cheap, so this is actually a money saver. I think the unit cost about $100+-.
BTW, I use Sirrus most often, then memory stick, then FM.
BillyIII, I've got a Garmin GDL30 with RCA outs and I'm going to get the SirrusXM weather and sat radio. If I have this hooked up to my stereo head unit, do I need to have a Garmin chartplotter turned on to listen to sat raido via the stereo head uint or is the GDL 30 powered all the time? I assume I'll need to let it on and change sat channels via the MFD. I have a small 3205 on the network that should work fine for that if needed.

I am now using the NMEA2000 version is your GDL30 a GDL30A? The A stands for audio. When using the GDL-30A I can't remember if my 3210 & 3205 that was on the Garmin network extender box I could control it with the 3210 can't remember if the 3205 would, I think it could. I am attaching the manual for the GDL-30A. I do know you will need your network extender box on if you have one in addition to the GDL-30A. It might work but to change channnels and set the initial audio outut you will need one of the plotters on. I have a feeling one of the plotters must be on. I could be wrong. Here is the GDL-30A manual http://www8.garmin.com/products/gdl30/ Here is the 3205 manual http://www8.garmin.com/products/gpsmap3205/ Bill

What are the benefits of using your nav equipment for music? If you want Sirius, receivers are dirt cheap... Why would you want to pay hundreds more for a Garmin receiver especially when you can get all the weather on smart phone, which most folks have these days.
Ron, I guess SD cards would fall under USB

To overlay active weather on you chart or use one MFD as a stand alone weather center Pascal, the audio control is just a plus and a small boarder style header.Chris my primary Garmin WX/and SIRIUS reciever is the GXM-51 I also have a GLD-40 as a back up that is strictly pay per day and on AT&T's M2M data network.

Gee, why pay money to have any electronics when you can just learn to play the guitar, use a sextant and use paper charts? Then you never have to worry about being out of cell phone range or any electrical failures and you've saved thousands.

This is not a dead horse.. I am keeping an open mind and try to see the benefit. I guess your post answers my question: no real benefit over a stand alone Sirius receiver where you can just hit a preset instead of using valuable plotter space

George you cracked me up with that one, I almost spit out a drink of cold water. Ok Pascal I see your surprised I'm not they offer some packaged deals with Direct TV it's included with most packages and to add it to a weather reciever it's less then $10.00 a month. That's why it's still popular. Bill

Because he wants the very valuable weather overlay and the integration, that's why! It's what HE wants to do on HIS boat, because that is what HE likes!
I don't understand why somebody would permanently run a twin engine boat on one engine either, leaving the other broken down, but if that's what makes it fun for those people, who am I to judge?

I no longer use the GLD-30A, it's long gone to another member of our marina, I use the GXM-51 on the NMEA2000 buss. However the question was asked how, if and could it be done. I know it can be done but I'm not sure if the plotter/MFD needs to be left on or if his 3205 MFD would control it. So I sent Chris the PDF's he already owns the box and you can purchase these weather boxes for a few hundred dollars know on EBay (refurbed). They are a great reciever I found the GLD-30A to be a better reciever then my GXM-51 but I wanted a mostly NMEA2000 network. Thanks George, I have to agree this is almost getting into a silly pissin match over nothing? A technical question was asked I did my best recollection and sent Chris additional information. Bill

Its a GDL 30A and has RCA outputs for the audio. I went this route since I want the weather overlay and don't want to pay a seperate subscription for Sat radio for the kids. Plus I've read that you can go on a month to month basis with this set up and don't have to pay for a whole year or when the boat is on the hard.

I m always trying to look at the practical side of these things.. Let say you only have one MFD, and you are zoomed in so you can get the details you need to navigate into an inlet or narrow channel as the weather is coming down. In order to view the radar and track that cell approaching, you have to zoom out to useless for close navigation range, loose track of the other boats on radar, just to look at the Wx radar. Then you have to zoom back in. Maybe it s just me but I find that grabbing my phone and looking at the radar is a lot faster and doesn't interupt navigation.
There are many ways to do things, no need to take alternative views personally.
George, it s obviously none of your business but these days I have other interests than taking the Hatt out to a local anchorage so indeed rebuilding one of my engine is at the bottom of the list after sailing and building the new boat. I don't even know if I m going to keep the Hatt and I may end up selling it as is with the bad engine instead of sinking money in it... But again, this is totally irrelevant to this thread

Well Pascal nice to have your practical view. I respect it but that doesn't mean I have to agree with you. Chris asked me a specific question it is clear from his post he has more then one MFD. It's also clear I have more then 1 MFD. I enjoy following your sloop thread where you are building a real nice sailboat it looks well constructed and I have confidence that you will finish it soon. Your not the only RO on the board that knows how to use radar or the other tools needed to cruise. It would be nice if you didn't try and play "Debbie Downer" almost every time I come up with a new product I am installing, reviewing and sharing with the board. This keeps the board from being stale and quite obviously provokes thought, shown with Chris's questions. Bill
