I need to replace the alternator on my '01 Merc 5.7 EFI and am not sure how to remove/replace the sepentine belt. The alternator appears to be on a Fixed bracket unlike older versions with serperate belts and tension adjustment made with the alternator.

On my van, there's a 1/2" square hole that a 1/2" breaker bar fits into. Pull down and block or tie the bar to keep the idler pulley 'open'.

Sepentine belt, 1/2 inch breaker is the way to go. It's a tension pully not an idler, there will be a socket drive in the middle of it.

there is no spring loaded tensioner you loosen the 5/8 nut on the adjustment idler then turn it with a 3/8s wrench its sorta a sprocket affair and moves up and down take a pic or draw the belt routing first its a bitch to figure out sometimes .....if you have a lot of belt dust you must sand the pulleys then scotch brite them. rust will kill those belts they must be clean ....if a serpentine sqeeks a bit of baby powder stops it

Thank you, I never looked at how simple they actualy made it to change the belt. I always keep 2 spares on board just in case of an emergency while under way but have never had to do it. Replaced the alt in 30 min - all good now.

You are 1/2 correct. It ain't good, but it's right. BTDT. Spent hours looking for an idler pulley on my 6.2's (same block stroked) until a mech told me exactly what Tugboat posted. The fact you have to adjust an "idler" pulley is a VLPITA, but it is what it is.
