So before we go through the pending conversation, I am planning on all the rights and ceremony to properly re-name my new 31' Carver. I have performed the ceremony before and already have bought both bottles of Champagne in preparation. What I need to do first though is figure out how to get the old name off. Is there a particular compound/paint remover/process that I need to use so as not to damage gel coat? Current name is blue paint and is faded. I just want to make sure I'm doing it right.....I'm assuming compounding in various grit levels then wax.

Has anyone got any tips?

I used acetone first, then compound and wax.

I have seen my local sign guy use Easy Off oven cleaner to remove painted names. Once removed, if the surrounding area appears faded,I would then wet sand with various grits followed up with compound and polish.

We used 600 grit wet sandpaper. Then compound. We then de-waxed put the new name on and then waxed. The reason we did it this way was because on our old 2006 48 sundancer you could still see shadows of the old name the entire time we owned her.

On the 58, you cannot see any sort of indication of the old name.

+1. Worked like a charm but did have a faint shadow which became less and less noticeable over time.

Doug,
I went to HD and bought a citrus paint stripper and it was almost effortless. I had to do it a couple of times and in a couple of areas I used a plastic scraper and after all the previous names were gone, a simple coat of wax.

+4 Easy-Off first. It's nearly impossible to wet sand the painted on name and not sand the gel coat around it, so it's best to chemically remove the old paint first.

Douglas, I used oven cleaner just last week, and it was truly the easiest way; the name did still appear after the transom dried off, but now it can be buffed or wet-sanded to remove even the shadow of the former name.

All depends upon how much shadow is left from the gel fading ad different rates. I don't like to aggressively wet sand for fading, but often you have to at least compound to get a result acceptable in the short term. Here's a hint though, don't wax the brighter gel that was under the old lettering if you have shadows. Let it catch up on its abuse a little and the gel will ultimatley match sooner than later (then start waxing).

EZ Off good for both paint and vinyl - though the shadow remains are best removed with acetone. Wash thoroughly immediately after. There's also a more enviro friendly product in the paint Dept at Lowes that works great full strength or diluted. Removes old wax beautifully.
