We sold our Kawasaki Jet Ski this weekend and proceeded with our plan to replace it with a small bowrider. Since our daughter loves to tube with friends the bowrider would be way more accomodating than the jet. This boat would be a complement to our main boat, a Regal 3260 Commodore.

Well, it did not take long to figure out that the small boat market is HOTTER than the temperatures. Nice boats, even modestly overpriced are sold before I can even call on them. Older boats, WAY overpriced are even selling steadily. I hate to think what it would take to sell my Regal, but I have a hard time realizing how many people are buying the smaller boats. Boating is not dead, or even close, its just downsized.

My hope is that as summer wanes a great deal with last long enough to complete. I'm looking forward to having the bowrider in our drystack facility and just puttering around on those odd days when its just me and I'm too lazy to take the big boat out!

"Boating is not dead, or even close, its just downsized"

That's actually good to hear -- although not necessarily for you as a buyer.

Robert

Remember, if you are going boating -- take your boat. Don't ask me how I know this.

My daughter/son-in-law had their 23' Yamaha for sale in early May. They ran an ad in Craigslist. Boat was sold and gone in less than 3 weeks at their asking price.

Go figure. Small boats are a whole lot more affordable, more "practical" (if that can ever be applied to a boat), less likely to be mortgaged to the masthead, and less likely to be given up than a floating condo that only gets used a few times a year.

And it costs a whole lot less to park a trailerable in the the side yard than a bigger boat in a marina...

TSR,
I just got back home from Gulf Shores. There seemed to be a lot of trailer boats at the consignment lots around Foley.

A few years ago I started a rebuild on an '88 17ft center console. I didnt mind putting the money into it, because I knew I could always get my money back out of it.

Im trying to get rid of my big boat right now. A few lookers but no one serious. Then again I am not really pushing it either

There are tons of 17-30' boats in the used boat lots in our area-and Florida is a prime market with little off season. Maybe you need to expand your search area to find what you want. A nice trailer boat would be worth a few hundred mile trip to save thousands.

The only thing that works on an old boat.....is the Owner.

Also been looking for a small bowrider.
Most people are asking above retail prices.
The ones who price right, sell quick.

I guess small in certain categories is selling well. I restored a reproduction daysailor of a Buzzards Bay 14 this spring as a fun project, and to hopefully not loose money on. Wasn't sure if there would be much interest. A barrage of calls and a full price bank check from the first looker (and a few backup offers) answered that question quickly.

That sailboat is amazing! I started my boating life as a sailor and my first two boats were sailboats. The kids (and admiral) moved me into powerboats and it has been fun. Sailboats are not so hot to tube behind. This morning I called about a good sounding deal on a 2006 Bayliner 175 with blue hull that looked in like new condition. By the time I got out of my first meeting of the day, I figured it would be gone. Called, and they said they still had it, the ad had been up for only a few hours. All of their other used boats were sold. So I made an offer and it was accepted. Pending a full inspection and sea trial we will being it home Saturday. I've not told the kids so it can be a surprise. Its exactly what I was looking for, small, economical, low maintenance, but fun! Gonna dry stack it where we slip our cruiser. No more slip sliding away when trying to launch the jet ski. I felt like I won the lottery finding this deal. Even though I paid only a little bit below average NADA.
