Poll Question:
Got to reading a thread about tow insurance and it raised a question in my head. do you tip the tow captain or not?

Most of us pay a decent amount of money each year for tow insurance. Personally, I wouldn't leave the dock without it. So it is a paid service coverage.

If you have a grounding or a mechanical failure and call your towing service, they respond and tow you in, do you tip the tow captain?

Bob

Choices:

Yes, I always do.
yes, I do if he arrives quickly and is a nice guy.
Only if the service is exceptional.
No, never, That's why I buy tow insurance in the first place..

If I'm obligated to tip 20% for some kid to take my order (and often screw it up) in a heated and air conditioned restaurant and refil my iced tea, I'm not going to stiff a guy who goes out in hot, cold, rain, etc. and tows me back to the dock, pulls me off a sandbar, etc. and saves my expensive boat with his equipment and skill.

I always try to keep in mind that these captains are regular working guys just trying to earn a living. I always tip and depending on the wait and service performed, rather well if quick and friendly. Never had a bad experience yet.

Never thought about tipping them Probably cause my mind is always on something else when being towed but Rawidman makes a good point. I am surprised I never thought about this because I am the guy who tips people for doing next to nothing.

guess Les needs to make the delete button just a little bigger!

i've never thought about this, and i've never been in a position to wonder.

personally, I feel tips should be only when someone goes beyond what is expected and what you are paying for... unfortunately this is not how things work and you end up having many services priced lower, and wages lower as well... i dont' like it but that's the way it is.

Only happened to me once so far going down the ICW,,and the guy stayed with me for about a mile after pulling me off the bottom, to be sure all was OK.. Well worth the 20%

I believe I would tip if my low fee unlimited towing insurance covered the tow , but probably not if the whole tow was out of pocket as those rates are quite high. But fortunately haven't had to find out either way yet with twin engines.
