Poll Question:
The thread about tipping a tow captain reminded me that I always wonder how much people tip at the fuel dock. Let's assume a trip to the dock where you buy anywhere between 25 to 100 gallons of fuel, get a pumpout, and service is normal.

Choices:

15% to 20% (or more) of total purchase
10% to 15% of purchase
A smaller amount but still calculated by %
A fixed amount, $20 or more
$10-$15 bucks
$5 bucks, if anything
I usually don't tip at the fuel dock

I always do my own filling with gas and pumping out and tip the dock hands $5 each for handling our lines.

99% of the time they "help" in handling the lines and hand me the nozzle. Thenm after I fuel the boat, that take the nozzle and hand me the bill. $5 seems enough.

Well I guess it's different everywhere... Around here most marinas are full service. I'd rather fuel it myself, but there's only one self service marina that I know of, and last year I got some bad gas there so I'm stuck going to places where they pump it for you. Honestly, since I'd rather fuel it myself and since starting the pump isn't a whole of work, I still give the just $5 for the fuel fill and if there's a pumpout I give them another $5 for that. And they seem sometimes surprised that I'm tipping at all which is why I was curious. I've asked around and it seems not tipping is very common.

If it's some 14 or 15 year old kid, he'll get $5 if he's trying hard. If it's a hot 18 year old blond chic in a skimpy bikini, a $20 might find it's way out of my wallet.

It depends a lot on the level of service provided. One time my wife commented that the tip seemed a little larger than normal and then summarized the service from the very cute college girl in a bikini as "a pumper with big bumpers"! Worth every dollar.

I have to jump off and tie up my own lines. There is no pumpout and I don't have a holding tank anyway. I also have to pump my own gas. So tipping isn't really applicable at my particular marina.

Considering 95% of the time I have to haul my own fuel, I keep the tip. On the rare times I do buy fuel I still fuel my own boat; I'm not going to tip some probably overpaid dock monkey to simply hand me the hose. Sorry.

They don't pump gas where we go and only help you dock it 1 of 4 times. They don't get tips.

I usually tie up myself and do my own fill-ups and pump-outs. Summer help gets $10 if they are friendly and helpful. Regular marina crew don't get tips.

Previous marina/gas pump owner was no help. I had to call him on the pumphouse phone repeatedly; he didn't help tie up or push off, handled me the nozzle and watched. Many gas docks aound here, it seems, don't pump the gas; they give the boater the nozzle because of "insurance requirements." The first time I did a pump-out, I handled the hose with instruction from worker; gave hime $5, which seemed to surprise him. Present marina manager/gas pump operator (different marina) helped with tie-up and push off, but still handed me the nozzle. No tip is expected because she's management.(I checked with other boaters at marina.) Hy

Well, in 2 years and 300 hours on engines over 2 boats, I've only had to go to the fuel dock twice the entire time- once to fill up the trawler and once to fill up the bayliner, both when I first got them. Trawler now only at half a tank and bayliner a little more than half. I have more time to contemplate tipping vs. not tipping before I have to fill up again. :)

They should tip me. There are only 2 marina's I've been to between VA and NC where the "crew" has been a lick of help. 99.99% of the time I'm on my own.

$5 for filling up. $10 if they pump out also.
Most of the time, I have to fill up myself.

At our home marina I rarely tip because the fuel dock is small and it's a DIY job. All they do is either allow you to purchase gas and if so then they unlock the pump. The pump is terribly slow and to do 300 plus gallons takes almost an hour.

You just don't boat enough.

It all depends on circumstances. Where we keep the boat now they fuel in-slip and the dock hand has to unreel a big length of heavy hose, and they will call out the gallons as they are dispensed. So a few bucks for sure on a $2000+ purchase. Ditto when buying off a truck and the guy has a lot of set up to do and provides full service. Where you pull up next to the pump and the guy hands you the nozzle, not so much. Or when I am putting 4 gallons into the Whaler..

I agree. My boat is on a trailer at the marina. They use tractors to launch and retrieve the boats. I tip going out and tip when coming back in. Needless to say, the tractor drivers somehow always put me on top of the their list.

I am a tipping machine. Yes, I pump my own fuel, but if there is going to be a spill, I don't want to pay the fine for someone else's mistake. I let them handle all the pump out doodies ;-) though. $5-$10 for helping into our slip every time. $5 for pump out. Every 3rd or 4th time someone gets a $20. And like Walter, thanks to you guys being such tight-wads, the dockhands always fall over themselves to give us a hand for everything we might need. It doesn't take much to make someone's day and even small gestures go a long way.
