Well it looks like after many years of service my A/C unit (Aqua Air) has bit the dust Just wondering what unit to buy. (1600 btu) Several makes on the market. Any one better than the other. I do want a unit that has digital controls. Thanks Joe

I'm a big fan of the new Vector Turbo units sold and marketed by Marine Airr and CruiseAir pretty much the same units (Dometic). They draw considerably less start up current (at least 40% less) when the compressor starts, have an ABS pan instead of the older metal pans and have new redesigned blowers that move 30% more air then their non Vector counterparts. I also have been using the Dometic condensate venture valve system to remove the pans water generated by condensation it removes the water by siphon like action of the valve and discharges it with the standard through hull AC units discharge raw water hose.

I just replaced my marine air units. I have four units and two went out last year the other two went out this year. A/C guy believes the prior owner used them in an area with a lot of sand as all four went out within 18 - 24 months of each other (8 years old). They were the Vector compacts. The new units draw less current than the old ones both at start up and while running. They are also quieter. Best of all they are noticeably cooler than the prior units which were the same size (2-16k, 10k & 8k units). Just finished a week of 100 to 105 degree temperatures and inside the boat was a comfortable 72. At that temp they were not running all the time so.

Mine are the Vector Turbo units. They do have the ABS pans and a remote electronics module which makes wiring them much easier

Due to price I tried the Webasto, MUCH cheaper than most others, West Marine will do a price match to Marine Parts source. I paid $1488 (price match)(16k heat and air) comes with 2yr warranty and West offers an additional
2 yrs, still making it a much better price than many on the market. The unit is VERY cold and little noise. Only slight draw back is that the blower runs all of the time. Unit comes with a remote control, which I like much better than the wall control.

WEBASTO makes many good marine units, which model do you have? I believe most models you can program the fan to turn on and off.
This function must be enabled and then the fan run times pre compressor and post compressor start/stop must be programmed.

To me, to have air constantly circulating is a huge plus in my book.

Billy, thanks for the reply, the Webasto is 16000 BTU FCF, other info FCF 0016000GS. The fan running
is not an issue in the AIR mode, I run all of my units with the fan on all of the time during the summer.
Hope the Webasto fan does not run in the heat mode. Overall, especially given the price I can't complain.
I do alot of Florida and Bahamas boating and the A/C's run most of the time.

If it is the one I looked at for my Regal, it is called the Mermaid Condensator. It is not a Dometic product and will work on any A/C unit.

Shop around. I found pricing varied a lot. Fair warning! They are expensive for what you get. They do work though.

Here is a link about the Condensate venturi kit. I would ask Les at BoatFix if he can get them. I forget where I purchased mine I believe a place in Miami.

Well after 4 seasons the only problem I had was realizing that the filter/ bowl assembly needs to be periodically cleaned. Twice a year seems to work fine in my case. We boat 9 to 10 months out of the year. If you don't clean the filter/ bowl assembly (really simple) it will eventually back the condensate water up and it will overflow out of the drip pan. The filter is there to keep the one way valve (similar to the PuraSan red valve) & the venturi assembly from getting clogged from dust or crud that normally accumulates in any AC units condensate drip pan.

Here is the manual it has section on programming the unit and the fan control. I know on my Marine Airr units the fan comes on before the compressor in either heat or coll mode then I have my units programmed to run for 45 seconds after the compressor shuts down. I use 12VDC Caframo fans to circulate air throughout the boat. The 12VDC fans really move alot of air and draw less current then running the blowers in the AC/Heat units.
