Several things to note: They got pooped repeatedly. The boats were rigged to not flood with decks awash and one had a para vane out. It was probably an ebb tide, or just turning to fllod, and if they had waited a few hours things would have been calmer.

Bunch of crap. As I was watching, I could tell there was rocks to their starboard cuz of the way the water was coming from that side. That was proven when the wider angle with the cameraman was in the pic. The port side looked quite a bit calmer. It was all set up.
I go thru water like that all the time but I take the easiest route. Plus, I have plenty of HP to make the run a simple one.

I assumed it's a "para vane" on the port side of the blue one. Is it some sort of stabilizer?. How come it's only on one side?.

Charlie: I thought that you might be reminded of the potato patch on the ebb. Those are probably displacement trawlers so power is of limited help.

Just another day on the job for these fishermen and some of you guys pi$$ and moan about the passing wake from a sports fishing boat. Classic opposing wind and tide (current) situation, these guys most likely face it every time they return to port. If you have a hold full of a fresh catch, you don't wait around for a nice day to come in, you are out there to make money and you only make that money when the catch hits the buyers dock.

Bruce, Unless there's an exceptional windy day with good size swells, the out going tide with the out going current just flat out cuts the legs offn' the swells. It can get flat calm on out going, even across the 'potatoe patch'. It's trying to get out on the incoming that gives you strong pucker muscles.

Yeah it never gets windy against the ebb coming out of the Gate, especially during the summer.... uh huh... and an outgoing will "flatten" incoming swells..uh huh. But then you wouldn't be on the Potato Patch to begin with... even still. Charlie, I have to say, having lived in the BA for the majority of my life, and boated a good deal of that, your post is, shall we say, hard to give credence to, unless you have been in some unheard of freakish conditions.

Pis& off Kieth! I was bitc&ing about the danger to other operators and my wife your a horse's a*s. Since I was not the boat intending to overtake a slower boat I was under no obligation to use my horns but I let you slide on that stupid statement. I was also trying to prepare other's for similar situations. I thought you were legitemate now I know your a simple minded troll. Bill

Geo, I've been going out the gate 20 years on my own and on party boats since the 60's.
I have been in some freaky situations...but pretty standard swells coming in while rounding Pt Bonita are 8 foot plus. I have turned around when there's a lot of wind with the swells.
I've been 50 mi out and a storm drove all the party boats in and I was the last one in cuz the boat couldn't take running in any faster than hull speed. I been coming in when long period 10' swell stacked up across the potatoe patch and grew to almost 20'. Just lucky there was no wind.
Just like L. keith said. Fishing boats HAVE to go out in some of the worse weather imaginable. The scariest are the crab boats going out with the decks stacked with a few tons of traps. I've been crabbing in 8' swells but don't crab any more. Too much work.
I been salmon fishing in 10' swell where I'm fighting a salmon that's higher than my head in the face of a swell.
Going out for tuna, we leave around 4-5 in the morning running against swells in pitch black...and my boat is only 24 foot.
It's all pretty standard stuff for fishing boats, even sports fishers like me.

L.Keith, My father taught me that you are responsible for your wake, I have experienced damage to my boat due to wake of another vessel and he paid a fine in court. BillyIII is right, I don't see any relevance to his post and this one other than to rail on a fellow boater. My BS meter is off chart

Where was the video taken?
Obviously these boats are designed to handle the conditions, sealed decks and holds, no ER vents, etc
Everytime I read one of Keith posts I wonder what he is doing here on boatered... There has to be a forum for AH Cos (Aging Hateful commercial old salts)
Too bad someone who would have a lot to contribute chose to be so negative...

You mean too bad I lost my temper? Your probably correct Pascal but the post will stand until either Les tells me to take it down or it or I am removed from the board. I am not standing by letting someone take a cheap uncalled for shpot at a legitimate post. I also didn't cry asbout it I stated what happened with no emotion. Just the facts in the thread "What would you have done"?. Bill

By the way it was a Charter boat captain that ran through a no wake zone in our marina in forked river and ended up paying a fine in court after seeing many witnesses. He was either drunk or did not give a crap.

Update the video was given to the authorities an ongoing investigation is happening. I'm not the 1st to complain about the behavor of this boat. There were 2 other complaints logged the day this happened to my boat around the same time and location but because I didn't capture the date and time (stamped) on the video and it does not show the boats name it's pretty useless other then it does show unsafe operation or reckless endangerment (what I was told). The only negative comment was that I should have immediatly reported the erratic behavor. Back to this thread clearly these boats are set up for running in this kind of surf. Bill

How did we get from a boat running a nasty inlet to some charter boat putting out a wake.
I am missing something here.

It just seemed to me that L.Keith was just comparing a passing wake and the complaints compared to what fishing boats have to go thru every day.
I really don't see the reason why every body got their panties all bunched up.

Charlie, The difference is that you can be held responsible for your wake and any damage arising from it. I don't think anyone can be held responsible for a rough inlet and damage arising from passing through. That's why the Coast Guard refrain from telling a captain that an inlet is safe to pass. Also the folks in a 20 foot boat would be irresponsible to allow themselves to be caught in the raging inlet.

I don't post to much but when i see a photo or video that i think others might find interesting, I'll post it. I didn't mean for this post to turn into a bashing match.
Anyway, as stated above, these captains and vessels are experianced and designed for these conditions. personally, i'm glad that i don't have to run in those kind of conditions.

Kev, I don't see how a wake got mixed up in the original post. Must be a continuation and/or argument from another post.
