I am most likely going to be replacing my canvas on my Regal 3780 as the original canvas is at the end of its serviceable life. The current canvas is Taupe color. I am thinking of changing the color. I have only seen this boat with Taupe/Tan, Black, or Navy. I wouldn't do Navy. Black is not my favorite, but a safe bet. I really like sunbrella Jockey Red and I know it would be daring. Everyone so far has advised me against it due to it being undesirable/dated. I think this looks sharp, but don't want to make an $6-8k mistake. Anyone care to share their thoughts?

Thanks,

Jim

IMHO you should get the canvas in a color you desire. Boating is irrational in the first place. It's a lifestyle that brings a smile to your heart and face. If thought about logically (with a pad and pencil), everyone would run as fast as they can. I recommend you get the color that when you see your boat, brings a smile to your heart and face. Take it from an old man; life is too short, get a color you enjoy.

You realize that boot stripes on regals are gelcoat and not tape. So changing it is impossible.
You will have to cover it with tape.

I don't like the red.
On a white boat I would go with black!

I would get the color YOU want Jim...especially if you're going to keep the boat a while. If you do sell it, the next owner can change the color if they so desire. It's your boat now. Do it the way you want it!

Your boat, your money. Do what you want. That said, it's dated. There is a Pristene SR 44 sun bridge For sale in the area. Red canvas. It's nice to the owner. It's a tuxedo in brown socks to most who are not the owner. I cannot hElp but wonder if the canvas is holding up the sale.

On the upside, if you decide to go with the red, there are a bunch of leisure suits at Goodwill you could buy cheap to wear while atthe helm!

Dave,
The boot stripe on his boat is not gelcoat, but rather vinyl tape.

Gary,
Maybe on the older models but my 2007 and 2009 are both gel coat or what regal calls molded in. Could be tape covered by gelcoat.

Actually you are both correct. One section of the stripe is gelcoat and the other slightly different shade is tape. At least that is the way mine was.

I went thru past model brochures and looks like 4080 was first year for this feature.
Basically boot stripe is not tape. Molded into gelcoat.

The 2001 boot stripe is entirely made of tape. I removed mine last summer.

KellyG,

Did you replace it with anything? I hate my stripe and already formed a plan of attack to remove it.

Thanks,

Jim

Jim,
I left the boot stripe off and do not plan on replacing it. I like the look without the stripe much better.
It only took me 2hrs to remove all the tape, so it's quite easy. I used a hair dryer along with an old credit card to scrape. Once removed I used a spray on adhesive remover, compounded, polished then waxed. If you would like to see pictures, let me know.

I took the plunge today also! My stript is almost all the way gone. My port side is turning out to be easy. The starbord side took 2 hours alone as that must have been the sunny side as it was very brittle and did not come off well. How did you manage the swim platform areas? I like the naked look as well, I'll probably leave it this way for a season as I am not certain on canvas colors yet. The gold is officially 100% gone from this boat now, aside from the regal nameplates!

I'd like to, but I can go back to my old place for half the cost. Unfortunately, I trusted the seller of my boat and took his word that the canvas was in great shape. It needs replaced and that's a lot of boat bucks! A $1650 savings in dockage will help bring the canvas bill down quite a bit. I miss the covered dock too. I haven't decided for sure, will this week. CP's express side is a good value. The other side, not so much (where I have to go now). I don't see how the additional 3' can add 33% to the price! And, the express dock location is MUCH more desirable than where I have to go now.

Jim

Let us know where you're going to be, and we can stop in to see you (maybe with a new boat as I got an offer on ours yesterday). We changed docks for 2013 and will be on 1317.

Congrats! I heard my old boat was sold to someone in Cleveland. Hope yours sells if you want to get rid of her.

Color is a matter of personal preference. But with that said, if you plan on ever selling your boat in the near future (life of the enclosure), you don't want "red". Just like homes, neutral colors or standard colors fit best to a potential buyer. Also, buyers that don't get what a nice boat this is, may not look any further when the red turns them off. Just saying what I have seen.

Agreed on the resale side. Red is not my first choice for the boat, but it's not my boat so it's your decision. Good Luck!

I have been told that red fades faster than any other color. Most beige shades actually have a red pigment in them and that is why they can fade as well.
