Ok, can anyone give me some feedback regarding 2000íish Carver 53 Voyagers?

Are the bottoms all glass or are they cored? Coring doesnít freak me out as my last boat had a fully cored hull, just something to look into.

Im looking at two boats, one with Cummins QSM 11ís & one with Volvo 12 Liters- both 610HP each side

I have heard mostly good on this board regarding Carvers, just want to dig into this model more

I would prefer Cummins.
I believe the Voyagers had fairly flat bottoms/ IMO they are very tall boats.
Owned a 1997 440 and it was well built with no wood in the hull. Cored above the W/L, solid hull, Don't know about the voyagers.

RE:Cummins
I'm with you on that Bruce- I lean to the Cummins too,
But the Volvo Boat is in much better shape with many more add-on's so it's making things tough.
I'm looking at the Volvo one this weekend. Now that it's just me & 1 mutt it may become a live a board?

The Volvo people don't seem to have many problems except with service and parts

I'd take your Cruisers 5000 any day over the Carver.
(Tho the latter may have more room for liveaboard).
Have owned 2 models of both brands, just my preference.
Favor Volvos from personal experience - tho parts more expensive
Tough choice; we should all have such a problem!
Good luck -
John

Consider moving that in to early fall.

Thx John
As for living space your right that the 53 Carver feels way bigger than the 5000 sedan
I saw the Volvo one yesterday and liked it enough to make an offer.

Hey Dan, as soon as 'Hurricane' season is over, plus Greenport NY is a great homeport so would be in no hurry to get out of dodge

That s a nice boat, nice classic conventional deaign unlike the wedding cake look of other carvers. Never ran one there used to be an RO who had one... art? I remember him giving us a tour a few years when we stopped at the same marina in NY. Nice. Boat sank under him 20 miles offshore a few Months later

Yea Art loved his boat, it was a 57' Voyager with 675HP Volvos. He said it really moved.
I think he hit a container off shore and the boat went down very fast?

I just reviewed my prospective 53 Voyager while it had the shrink wrap on & will join the surveyors in a couple of weeks for the full gig. Really looking forward to it
BTW the present owner is 77 and bought the boat when it was a year old, had it for 17 years and the boat really shows the care he took. with the exception of Electronics it seems there has been constant upgrades and full maintenance,

Pascal, Im with you, i think her lines are pretty good also

For the survey Carver installed some exhaust mixers that would drain into the engine if they failed. They replaced those under warranty. Just something to check.

A full lexan enclosure would be a nice addition to that boat. A good canvas guy will know how to use 30GA lexan to curve windows and eliminate frames at corners. I added a peak awning or hat bill to the front of my enclosure to provide shade when driving. Weblon top provides different inside and out color options. I chose white on the outside for less solar heating and light grey inside to reduce glare on the instruments. Smilies in the front windows provide ventilation when I didn't want the windows fully open because of rain. The hat bill awning kept the smilies dry. My PIX are trapped in photobucket otherwise I would repost them.

Have fun!!

Bruce, Thx for the detailed info. I know it comes from real experience.
But if this boat is anything like my last Cruises Iíll most likely take all the bridge canvas down and cover the bridge with ether a mooring type cover or canvas covering the Helm as well as the seating. Iíll keep the Bimini but only open it when needed. One of the reason im liking this boat is that itís a pilothouse and I hoping to run it from the lower helm most of the time. Some of the existing canvas looks relatively new so I may just store it. Iím hoping that like my 5000 Sedan, once all the canvas off it will help cutting down on windage. Plus full canvas for this puppy ant cheep

That being said I might have some canvas work done in the cockpit area

You are welcome Andy. In this area many operators with up and down helms run up top when inshore most of the time because of better visibility.
