Below is from my mechanic, has anyone had this promblem.
Thanks,Steve

The problem you are having is with your exhaust risers. All four show signs of what I would consider premature failure. They're only four seasons old.The failures are occurring in the area of the casting near the top where the bolts pass through the riser and go down to the manifold. There is a concave shape to allow room for the bolt which seems to decrease the thickness of the riser in certain areas. All of the signs of failure are in these same spots. As I told you on the phone Rick, my service manager, stuck his screwdriver right through the inboard riser on the port motor. These risers list for about $515 each form Volvo so you are looking at a pretty significant cost.
Riser (or manifold) failures can lead to water ingestion into the motor which can lead to very costly damage. Needless to say, its not worth risking engine damage by not replacing all of your risers. If you call Volvo you can give them my number if they would like me to explain what we are seeing. I checked with Master Marine again today and Volvo is now showing the risers in stock and ready to ship. My recommendation would be to go ahead and get the risers ordered while you see if Volvo will help you out with this issue. You can't run the boat the way it is so if they drag their feet it will only extend your time on land.

I am having the risers replaced on my 2006 3860 (VP 8.1 gas) right now. Noticed some external leakage on one engine which the mechanic said was due to bad gasket. He was going to just replace the gaskets on both engines but when he opened them up he said the risers were rusted and should be replaced. Being done under engine warranty. He also said that VP had some problems with the gaskets - but who knows.

Gerry,
What kind of water are you in, seems like rust would not be an issue even in salt water for an 06

PromisesKept: I thought the same thing but could not get to the boat to see the risers and when the mechanic said he would replace it under warranty I was fine with it. I am in Long Island Sound and although I do not freshwater flush everytime I do use Nutrasalt. In my marina, risers are replaced on most boats every 5 - 7 years. Also recommended that they be removed and cleaned about every 3 yrs.

Gerry,
Thats even more amazing because my 03 has never been flused and I am in pure saltwater. I am going to have new manifolds put while they are doing the risers. I think maybe I will have them check the heat exchangers also.

Steve

Doesn't seem odd to me.

I've heard that 3-5 years is the average life span for risers in salt water.
