Aluminum Pitting

I have a piece of aluminum border running along the inner and outer edges of my radar arch. The underside of the outer (stern) edge is pitted and marked and I can't get it off with conventional cleaners. I could probably sand it off but am uncertain if that is appropriate. Is there a good way to remove this type of pitting/marking without creating a bigger problem?
