Croaton Bay

South side or North side?

We spent the weekend on the south side due to the wind being from the west which makes the north side a rock and roll festival.

The north side is my favorite thou...

Was that Croton or Croatia? I'd hate to see the fuel bill :D

Yeah, croatia. Was a haul.

Um, we were on the south side? The bay seemed kinda small, like maybe 1/2 mile across, unless I am mistaken.

We were there until about sunset on Saturday, then headed south. There were a few people rafted up and chillin. It was pretty cool.

Had another great day at Croton (or is it Croatia?) Took my parents out and they had a good time. This time I had all 3 kids in the water, and they were loving it. When we started heading home, my youngest one(2) had a meltdown becasue she wanted to go back in the water.

Why are the weekends so short and the weekdays last forever?

We were there on saturday (north side), and wow was it rocky! But it was so nice and we were so hungry we just dropped the anchor and hung out there. Water was a bit cold but still went for a quick swim.
Great little spot!

Heading up to Croton this weekend from Sea Bright NJ,I understand it can get rocky on the north side so I quess the south is the next choice. Are there any unknown obstacles that are not charted?secrets etc..I have a 3.5 draft.Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Follow this chart:

Great,thanks..been there a couple times but it's been a few years...Does it still get crazy on th WE's?

The North side is usually nicer. The sandy bottom makes it nice to walk around if you are shallow. The south side is muddy.

The north side is where the town beach is as well.

As you approach North Croton, give the point quite a bit of room as Potato rock is just off the North East section of Croton point.

If you decide to go to the South Side, give Tellers Point a lot of leeway. There are submerged rocks that extend from the point quite a distance South.

Ooooooops.. Correction- Potato Rock is on the North West part of Croton Point.

Just follow the yellow line on the above chart, and you'll be fine. If you go in closer than the red line, you may hit bottom at low tide.

Did anyone anchor there overnight this last Saturday night? The wind really started up about midnight...

I was there. Woke up at 1AM to the sounds of boat horns as number of boats broke free. The wind was pretty intense and it did rain a bit as well. We had a bit more than 10 to 1 scope and had no problem holding but I was concerned about some of the other boats.

Stayed in the bridge for a few hours and had the drag alarm set. Suddenly it went off and the track on the displayed clearly showed we were dragging. A quick check of the on shore landmarks and my brain said, "no way we are dragging". Continued to watch the GPS and in a few minutes the track showed me being about 500 yards on shore. Seems there was an electronics glitch. We had not dragged at all.

My point is electronics fail and doing things the old fashion way, ie; on shore landmarks is still important!!!

BTW - Croton was not my favorite place last night.

I was anchored out in a three boat raft. The wind starting howling around 1:00am. Stayed up till around 3 to make sure we werent moving or dragging. Took a bearing on a buliding on shore. Luckily, we never moved. Went into the cabin to try and sleep but the waves slapping against the bow sounded like a cannon going off.. Woke up to the wind still blowing out of the North. Back to the marina around 10:00. Just another evening in Parrotdice!!!
