kingston??????

How far is it from Kingston to Catskill? Is that a nice/scenic stretch of the river? Not going that direction this year but we really enjoyed Rondout when we were there a couple years ago and I was thinking of doing it again in another year or two and making a different stop also.

We really enjoyed Catskill as well. It's about 45 minutes from Kingston (depending on speed, etc). And like I said, the people at Catskill Marina were stellar!

As long as you don't mind walking through the desolate part of catskill to get to the other places yes there are some things to do. But, they have a police station right on main street for a reason.
Conca D'Oro is good and we have enjoyed eating there. Tai ain't my thing, and the pool is on the small side. By the way the pool area is in shade for the most part thus it stays cool (for us).
Historically the fuel prices were higher at Catskill also.

Ah, a good old fashioned Catskill vs Rondout fight!

Let me know if you think I am off base, but I think I have been accurate. While we have not walked around in Catskill for a couple of years, we know that things are improving, it's just that there isn't that much within walking distance for dining that we enjoy. Other than Conca D'Oro, it's slim pickens'. There is a place a Hop-O-Nose also, but walking there is a bummer.
Kgn. has that hands down.

So is that chocolate store still in business up there?

I don't think anyone is out of line on this thread, each one is presenting their position as to why they like one place over the other. Anyone who is trying to make a decision has plenty of info on both places, now.

Me, I like them both, for different reasons, and I don't think you can go wrong with either one!

That is true, Mike...

The thing I like at Catskill is the big park and farmers market at the edge of the creek, which wasn't mentioned above...

What Dan is referring to, I think, is the fact that Catskill is not really the place you want to walk around in after dark. By day its fine, and I like Catskill Marina (or Hop o Nose too) and Dolores and Co. are first rate hosts. And the laundry/toilets/showers are excellent, as are the grills, pool and grounds. On the other hand, Kingston is bigger and has more to do overall, especially after the sun sets, IMHO...

We've been to that market, and well, sometimes it's ok, and other times, there's not much there. Often times it's been closed for a private event. It just so happens that Kgn has one also, however it is uptown and will require a taxi ride. Not worth it pro'ly unless you are looking to stock up on some veggies or have a car.

Catskill vs Roundout ? - I'll take the creek anytime .

We sure had a very fun one day visit to Kingston. We were on the bulkhead right at the end of Broadway; a bit funky, but the town dock guys and cops were great. We had a surprisingly great Tex Mex meal at Armadillo; we lived in Dallas for years before starting our big cruising adventure, and are pretty discerning TM diners. It was a little pricey, but definitely satisfied the need. Great ice cream town too. I enjoyed the river museum; any of you guys ever go ice boating? The museum has docks too, but they are pricey: $2.50 a foot for our boat as I recall, vs. $1.50 at the town dock next door. They were empty and the town dock full as a result. If you want a little more distance from "the public" I can see why RYB would be attractive.

As part of your dockage, the town dock gives you passes to the trolley shuttle that goes up town once an hour. We definitely hope to return on our way back down south in the fall, and per this thread, explore Catskill a bit too, which we missed on this trip. We could easily have spent a week in Kingston alone. You locals certainly have some of the most gorgeous cruising grounds anywhere. This was one of the real highlights of our whole trip.

George

moored for the summer in Westport Harbor MA, which isn't too shabby either!
