Went to see the fireworks at Bear Mountain last night. Was very nice to see and things were pretty controlled boatwise.

That is until it was time to leave.

To the big sportsfisher that just had to get out in front of everyone else, may your lines remain empty all season.

To the people that don't bother to check if ALL their nav lights work may you walk into a wall in the dark while heading to the bathroom each night. A boat without a red port light is useless and dangerous.

To those that choose to blow by a boat off plane because is just too darn dark to see the debris in the water as well as too many boats to operate safely, may you hit a log and destroy your props. The prop place in Newburgh could use the business.

And lastly, to those that think the spotlight is a running light, you suck!

Other than that we had a wonderful time!

Decided to spend the night at Croton instead of heading back to the marina.

This only proves that to operate a boat you do not need a working brain, only a checkbook. Many people it appears leave the brain at the dock when they go out. You somehow managed to locate a bunch of these type - all in one day. Well put however.....

whenever i go to see fireworks off downtown miami, i always wait 45 minutes before leaving.

years ago, the first times i didn't and found myself having to get on plane just to be safe and not to get it from the back.

I was there too and we had a great time. Waited for about fifteen minutes before weighing anchor and then headed out nice and slow. Did not encounter any real a$$holes except for the few that had to jump up on plane immediately and blast past the rest of us. But the ride back down the river, with the full moon directly above and ahead of us was just super. After awhile, when radar was clear, we too go up on plane until we got to the entrance of Haverstraw Marina. All in all, a great evening on the water.

Try to remember the good times and forget the bad. It's a motto that serves me well. As long as everyone on your end of the deal get's home safe is what counts.
By the way, this is shaping up into one of the best weekends we will have. ENJOY IT!

I used to go anchor out to watch fireworks around here on July 4th almost every year but it got to the point where I saw so many people doing stupid/dangerous things when it was time to leave that I don't bother anymore. Usually we go somewhere where we're at a marina and can watch the fireworks from the dock, although that won't be the case this year.

Last night we had fireworks nearby, went out about 8:30 and anchored on the edge of the "crowd." Bottom line, the gas prices have narrowed the crowd and the few idiots who invariably do show up had no one to bully. It will be interesting to hear how many boats are up in Kingston for tonights show, traditionally the best on the Hudson.

We were up in Waterford for the Steam Boat Meet this weekend. It was terrific. All of the docks were loaded up for the show participants so we anchored out across the river near North Troy. No problems at all. The fireworks were great and we did not have to deal with any idiots. It did get quite windy up here though. Unusually cool, but I am not complaining!

Now Wednesday night in Albany is always "interesting" to say the least. We have the same types up here too. The go fasts and fifteen foot bow riders loaded up with ten people. Always take our time going back and do the best we can to enjoy.

Hey Ken! Glad to hear you had a good time up there. I just wanted to tell you the last edition of B.O.T.H. was great! All that color made a real difference. Keep up the good work, and pass my compliments on to John as well :) !!!

Speaking of stupid moves...here are my observations from a quick trip to Monmouth Beach, NJ:

1) No wake in the Atlantic Highlands and Shrewsbury river means...nothing, totally ignore if you'd like!!
2) Why is there a hot dog guy in the middle of the channel at Atlantic Highlands? Surely there's a better spot than that narrow stretch with plenty of current.
3) When you go through the small boats anchored at Sandy Hook, they all wave if you come off plane and negociate the field...why don't more people do this?
4) Those small sailboats near the battery...WTF? Can't you find a more populated area of river to run back and forth in?
5) The small sailboat with a bright red sail...you look like a channel marker from a couple miles out...you idiot!

Chris we've come to believe that the folks in (1) are the bait to get you (the out of town'er) to misbehave so the 'bouoys' can get you.
One observation we've made is most of the speeding occurs on the non-populated side of the channel outside the channel. It didn't matter if we were in a dink and they were a sport fisher either.

Yeah there is a sailing school at Liberty Landing Marina and they all putz around the harbor there. If you see 26' red Colgates, stay away from them. They are usually out of control.

I try very hard to resist badmouthing sail boaters but on Saturday, we were doing a patrol for the the outrigger canoe race with the Coast Guard Auxiliary. Our job is to warn recreational and comnmercial traffic to protect the canoes. A decent size sail boat is coming right at a canoe. So I head right at his bow to get in front of him to try to get him to change course. That's really the only way I know how to intercept other boats if I feel that they are putting canoes or swimmers or kayaks or whatever we are protecting in danger. One of my crew mates gets on the hailer and tries to tell the sail boat that there is a canoe race and to please change course. They get all pissed and yell back that they have the "right of way."

Can you imagine a sail boat thinking that they have the right of way (no such thing in this case) over a canoe on a planned race course. They had a permit and it was published in the local notice to mariners.

Hope the weather is not going to be as bad as they say for Wednesday. Good chance for showers and t-storms up here.

Hello Pete, Hope all is well with you and yours. Thanks for the complement! Hope to come down your way and visit in a few weeks. Working on getting my Zodiac project finished so we can tow that behind, then anchor out and buzz around the creek.

Geo I'd say the crowd for Kgn was definitely smaller than it has been in the past, but that is their loss since the show was Great!
