Get Boat off Long Island to Be Shipped

I am closing on a 45 Sea Ray Sundancer (not the one with the spyder cracks)

She's at the Marina at Huntington.

Apparently there are SIGNIFICANT wide load shipping issues on LI that will force the cost up about 25%

One transport firm suggested I run her (or hire a captain) to Brick, NJ for easy loading.

This boat was owned by an 86 year old gentleman and has seen little use since 2017.

She's been shrink wrapped since last fall.

She should be surveyed last week of October and shipped beginning of November

I am concerned that her fuel tanks may be full of sediment, will likely have someone come out to polish tanks

Still, I am MOST UNCOMFORTABLE running to Brick in an unknown boat that has been sitting for all this time.

Any suggestions on a closer marina that could set her on the hard, yank the props and radar and set her on the transport?

Check with Svensson or lighthouse transport both located on Long Island. They were both cheaper then most when I brought a boat up from Florida. Once you spalsh the boat anywhere in nj potential running is an issue.

Couple of thoughts. Are they goint to prep it for a sea trial? If it can survive a sea trial, you'll at least have that under your belt. Second, what about going with a buddy boat. Someone online might be willing to help out.

By running to the north side of the sound there are very many places to have the boat hauled etc.. But you still have the issue of it being hauled through Bronx/NYC bridges etc..- where as any NJ port bypasses that- I'm guessing Jersey City would be more costly to haul etc than more southern NJ ports, but cant say for sure

Im guessing that boat should run in the 22+kts range and should be a couple of hrs to to Jersey City from the huntington lighthouse- depending on which Huntington Marina it could take 15min just to get out of the harbor

We have no real there experience in this area but, we took our boat South from Kingston NY to Fl.. I wonder what there is available going into Pt. Pleasant etc. via Manasquan inlet. While Barnegat Bay is shallow, we crossed on the inside from Manasquan to Barnegat Inlets without issues. There have to be places along that path for a haul out. Plenty of places to throw the hook if need be.
A good survey should shake out most of the issues. Having spare filters, impellers etc. could be all that is required to get the job done. In fact it it was laid up that long, just do the pumps etc. before leaving and carry spares.

I am going to push owner to replace the 4 year old batteries , all fuel filters and impellers

Then Maybe I can find a fuel polishing service to clean the tanks AFTER she passes the sea trial

liberty landing, in Jersey city should not be too bad. maybe 40 or so miles from Huntington? No offshore at all, in view of the city the entire ride. Get your insurance / towing coverage up to date - and you could probably get towed most of the way, if something goes wrong. If you want to go another 15 or so miles, that puts you in Atlantic Highlands - plenty of marinas there, i suspect the haul out will be cheaper than Liberty Landing. And you are well outside NY now. there are also a few marinas on the Navesink, and in Oceanport. I don’t see much reason to take the offshore ride to Manasquan inlet.

Time that east river trip with the tides - I got that wrong once on a windy day, and it was kind of scary.

If you are not comfortable, put a few hours on it a couple days before the trip. Keep close to the Marina where it is stored just in case. If something is going to go wrong from the extended storage, it should happen by then.

I took my boat from Westerly RI to Haverstraw Bay on September 29-30 a couple of years ago. I didn't factor in the issue with marinas not being open late or perhaps during the week after labor day....keep that in mind.

If it was me, I would probably winterize it in place, rent a slip on Long Island for the month of May, maybe June too, splash May 1st, enjoy what Long Island has to offer, get to know the boat and take it home at your own pace.

Not sure where the final destination is but I assume you can get there by water saving all of the grief (and costs) of hauling, prepping for hauling, etc. Plus its a different place to visit / live on boat for a few weeks.

2 years ago Mid November I ran from Greenport LI- through the sound, east river & down the coast ( getting stuck in ocean city MD 3 days during a snow storm) ducking inside at Norfolk ending up in Charleston- The worst seas we had was on the LI Sound !

In a boat you had faith in and were comfortable with.

Well, if you are in Florida, unlike us, you don't have to wait until May to enjoy her, I get it!

I suggest calling the hauling firms mentioned here, they will give you the facts regarding the permit issues. I would then call some yards in New Jersey asking for transport recommendations. I believe HOGAN did the reverse trip once or twice, maybe he can chime in.

I don't know why people recommend Brick, NJ, for that you have to go through the Mannesquan Inlet and Point Pleasant Canal. Another option is around Atlantic Highlands but its a long stretch from the Battery to there in somewhat open water. I think Liberty Landing, while expensive, might be your best bet location wise in NJ.

Having said all of that, perhaps being hauled from the area in Long Island and dealing with the special permits is just as expensive and much less stressful. Again, call the pros, they would know what to do.

If it was earlier in the season with longer days AND i trusted the boat, I'd consider a run down the coast.
