I've witnessed non violent explosions close up (not me). They do exist.

Sniff the bilge before starting the engine...

I am of the school that believes that there are no "accidents", only failures to follow ( safety ) procedures.

In a rush to enjoy each other's company, they very likely skipped a few "unnecessary procedures" so as to get out and commence relaxing.

Follow the procedures. In the long run, that is actually the quickest way to do it. In this case, they will have to wait for healing and repairs before they can head out for a nice relaxing cruise.

Glad they are more or less ok, but this should have been avoidable.

Back in the 80s when we had a boat at Grandparents house in FL, that happened to us. People ran like cockroaches when the light is turned on.
