Any known things to look for/problems? I am looking to by one. It has a new lower unit due to electrolosis and a 350MPI Horizon engine.(60 hours) Engine was replaced as the owner never changed manifolds/risers so you know what happened there. The boat looked ok it needs a few minor things. Lock on fridge broke, a small tear in rear seat. The speedo isn't working but he said that the speedo tube was pinched when installing outdrive. Shift/Steering cables were replaced along w' gimbal bearing & bellows. Mechanically it should be perfect as it's all new. Any tips?

I have a '98 and love it. The boat has a good enough amount of room for a weekend for two (or with a couple of small kids). We also had the lower unit replaced prior to buying ours last fall due to Bravo III corrosion. We have the 350 w/ TBI which is 260 HP. With the MPI you will see some nice speed and out of the hole performance with the Bravo III. We have really had minimal problems except a few things that the previous owner left over. I did replaced the circulation pump due to a leak, but everything else was solid. the boat has a solid feel yet handles well. It does tend to lean to Starboard, but I have heard that is common for that boat. The only concern I would look into is I have heard some models having fuel tank corrosion, which you can see through the 2" hole from the engine area. I would also ask your surveyor about the transom. I did hear of some issues with the core of the transom being of foam or balsa, I don't remember, but it would be worth mentioning. What is the asking price, with a trailer, and what drive?

Good Luck,
MJK

P.S. - Don't overlook a survey and engine compression check.

The outdrive is a bravo 3. It also has a new upper housing(it cracked) How can I check the transom? I am not having a survey done. What prop pitch do you have and what speeds are u getting? This one has a 20 pitch prop. They lean as the holding tank is on the right side. nothing trim tabs can't fix. The fuel tank looked ok but I will look better. Not much room to crawl around in there. The compression was done end of last season 215 & 210 lbs in all cylinders.

I would definitely get the survey done unless it's practically free. I am not sure about how to check the transom issue, but I am sure a surveyor could. That year may not have that issue but i am not sure. If both the upper and lower were replaced, it may be an indication of some neglect on the previous owners side. I have a pitch of 22 and it gets on plane pretty quick and tops out around 36-38 MPH. I did hit 42 once, but I think it was the current, the wind and mother nature pushing. Yes the holding tank and fresh water tanks are on the same starboard side, and just a bit of trim and your ok. Compression looks good, even a bit high.

The drive was a corrosion problem. Not sure id it was owner neglect or a possible faulty mercahode system on the old engine or if he never changed the zincs. I really like the 98 style with the marine vinyl cuddy.

Shaun-
I own a 1996 250 Dancer and had to replace the fuel tank. Seems this is somewhat of a problem inherent to that model. The cost of the replacement tank was $700.00. The good news is that it is not a really big job to replace. About a 4 hour job.
That is the only issue I've had with the boat, other than normal wear & tear.
Good luck.

I will have to inspect the tank closely. How did you know that you needed to replace the tank? Thanks

Shaun-
The tanks sit on a false floor with strips of rubber and metal straps to hold it down. Since it sits so close to the floor and the rubber cushions get wet, they hold moisture and that is where mine rusted thru. Mine was stored in a rack on the Tex. Gulf Coast and I'm sure the salty air and salt water added to the problem. The only place you can see the tank is thru the 2-3 inch hole in the bulkhead in front of the engine.
Can't tell you common this problem is, just know it happened to me. Again best of luck.

Woops!
Sorry about that. That sight is a good source of searay info, but not enough general info or entertainment!
