I just got a 1987 277XL this year. I never gave it aa thought, but it seems the refrigerator only runs on DC. When I left the boat Sunday noght, I left the battery charger off. I came back to the boat last night to find one dead battery. I hope I have not kill the battery for good!

My question is, does any one know if the refrig should run off both AC and DC.

This weekend, I am going to try to get behind it, and see but knowledge is power. (pardon the pun)

There may be a Mfg serial ID plate on the inside of unit that you can see by by opening the door. I should indicate if it is AC/DC or DC only.

Scott,
I had an '86 277xl and mine ran on DC only. Hope your battery isn't totally "gone".

Hi Scott,

We have a 1989 Regal 280, which is basically the same boat.. and our fridge is DC Only. There is no AC option on it.
I've questioned it several times, but this is indeed the case..

Based on that, we have to leave the charger on all the time if the fridge is left on. Basically, I leave the charger on all summer, but I do check the battery water level frequently.

If your battery is not too old, and is a deep cycle, it should probably be okay, but I did kill a relatively new battery a couple years ago when the charger was turned off by mistake and we ran the battery down. Basically, we lost one cell in the battery and she was never the same after that.

Leave your charger on, or you’ll need to turn the fridge off when not in use, which is a pain.....

I hope this helps assist.
Regards,

I have a 1985 277XL and had to replace the charger. It overcharged the batteries and boiled the water out. You can turn off the fridge if your worried about the batteries.

Thanks for all of the replys. I did get back to the boat this weekend (He!! who am I kidding I get to the boat every weekend!) but I did not look behind the frig, to see what is there. The battery seemed find when I got back after being charged. It is a dual purpose battery, which I plan replace and reconfigure this winter. I want to replace it with 2 batteries.

Hi, we have a 1986 Regal 277XL and the fridge is DC only - we have to shut it off while at the mooring. Very simple as it is a small unit and not too much fits in there! I just got a foil pan with 3" sides and as soon as we get to the mooring just turn it off, put the contents of the frige in the cooler and the foil pan to catch the 'freezer' drippings.

We also did put in a 'house' battery. Good idea if you are going to be on a mooring any amount of time.

good luck! keep us informed!
