My boat is a 2006 Sea Ray 240 Sundeck with a 350 MAG, Bravo 3. There are plastic blue drain plugs used for the raw water cooling system. The plugs are shaped like wing nuts but the wings tend to get hard and break off after repeated usage. The high point plug going into the thermostat (I think) broke and I tried to drill out the old plug and replace it. Dumb mistake. Threads are now stripped so that it won't take a new plug and make a water tight seal.

Interested in options to fix this without major surgery. I could drain the system for winterization just fine with the old plug in there so don't really need to have functioning plug. Thinking of getting some plumbing product to seal the hole but not sure.

Any ideas would be appreciated!

If not stripped too bat, tap and dye and a new blue plug with some teflon tape. If you need to go a bit larger, tap and dye and a fitting from a plumbing supply house. I would use never seize on the fitting and exercise it once per season.

I'm out of ideas!

KIDa -- Thanks for your help.. Your advice was spot on. I bought a 13 size plug tap, which is the correct match of the blue plug threads. The problem was that the old blue plug basically melted into the threads. The tap blew out that residue with no problems! New blue plug went in perfectly with no leaks. Problem solved!

My normal maintenance is to replace those blue plugs every three years because I don't want them to break due to age. I also poke around with a bent nail when I remove them in the fall as the winterizing mix runs through the hole.
