Hey guys, I am in the market for a good 396my. Probably a 2001 thru 2003 model. Can anyone give me the good, bad, and ugly (if any) on this model. Also if you like yours let me know the good points. No kids, no pets, but maybe 2-3 couples cruising SW Florida a few times a year is our goal. Recommendations helpful.
Thanks

Good boat and a good layout...very large salon, decent engine room for her size nice galley, etc. Get diesels if you're in FL or using it a lot. Bridge is a tad smallish for her size but nice aft deck and good wide access to foredeck. Typically, a well selling boat.

Make sure you make a low offer.
There is 2002 gasser in the SF Bay Area that has been for sale for over two years and still asking $169,000. At that price it will stay on the market for much longer.

Thanks and keep the replies coming. I have found these models in the 140k to 200k range with diesels and low hours. Are there any no-no's or certain things to watch for other than typical items found with any purchase?

We have the stretch 2002 model(444)of the 396. Can't say enough good things about the boat. Lots of room. If comes with a gen, ours is enclosed but not well insulated which results in a noisey cabin when running. It has diesels and recommend you stay away from gas as it is a heavy boat and needs the torque of diesels to maneuver in tight spaces. Ours does not have the dinnette and we purposely looked for one without we wanted the extra room in the cabin. Hope this helps.

Great info guys, Thanks...
bradt...do you find that the tunnel drive props are a problem in tight maneuvering vs. the non-tunnel boats? I noticed this boat is very heavy compared to a Sea Ray of equal length. Do you have input on this? Where does the 444 excel over the 396? Can you give me an estimated real life fuel burn with diesels? How do you use your 444 mostly? Overnites? Long Cruises? etc.
Thanks again...

MrsRobinson...Hi
I found a post you did a few years back asking for info on a 396. Did you and the Admiral purchase this model? It seems your questions and concerns are the same as mine. Can you chime in with results if you did make the purchase.
Thanks..

I have had no problems maneuvering in tight quarters with this setup. Very responsive. It is heavy compared to other boats I have had and more windage but with the diesels/prop responsiveness I have not had a too much of problem with maneuvering, etc in windy conditions. Also being heavy helps with with the rocking motion at anchor in windy or high wake areas. We use are boat mostly for weekend/overnite trips, average 25miles one way. Absolutely no trouble with anchor/anchoring setup. You set it once and it stays even in pretty good summer storms with strong winds. As for diesel burn I have not paid too much attention to it most likely because I wouldn't like the results. We cruise at ~22knots (2400RPM), have four tanks, (I don't think the 396 has four or at least the 444's aux tanks are under the cockpit area which the 396 does not have). We like the cockpit model as it gives us three seating areas, 2 of them covered (aft deck; helm) and 1 open/outside (the cockpit - place to barbecue, suntan, party, etc...) Hope this helps.

Very helpful, Thanks...We really like the 420 Sea Ray also. Tough decision....

Greg Robinson is a friend of mine. He bought a Regal like Rommer's.
